Depends on what you are buying, I understand if you can buy fuel in quarts hazmat fees are not required.

I assume that you are trying to beat the fee on fuel, not Lithium Ion batteries.
Either way, contact a vendor and find when they will be attending a contest or Swap Meet in you area and drive to pick the product up.

local pickup
limit quantities, or size to fall under restrictions (order quarts)
choose slower surface transportation (which is usually cheaper anyways)

Other choices include
going in with other people on a large order.  This divides the hazmat fees out so there is less fee per person.

In some cases contact your LHS about adding your stuff onto their order, if they already do business with the company in question.

And if you are in a hurry just bone up and pay the fee.  Hazmat and quick transportation are not very compatible.

its funny this should come up.  I asked this just yesterday.

Torco fuel clams no hazmat fees on gallons.  I don't get it.

I asked about 100% nitro $53 shipped, and asked if I could get a little better deal if I bough some methanol and spread the hazmat fees over a larger order.

their response is no hazmat on gallons, only pails ( 5 gals), and no discounts on shipping.

So I don't get it. Is mixed fuel different?

This is via amazon.  There fuel (35$/ gal)  and methanol (28$/gal) is not a good deal but $53 for nitro shipped isn't bad.

4 years ago when I bough nitro the vendor sent the sales guy out and I had to meet him in some parking lot with cash and it was in quart bottles. Last time I bought a gallon of nitro and 3 gallons of methanol from the same vendor all in gallon jugs shipped UPS and no extra fees. I think the laws have changed or maybe vendors are just ignoring it to get more orders.

I ordered a gallon of Crystal Clear from Brodak a couple of years ago and he sent four quarts to get around the fee.

I inquired of VP Racing Fuel about this (I was angling for the requirements to be a dealer, he wouldn't even tell me).  They have a club purchase program.  So if you're a member of a club and there's enough folks who want to buy fuel, you can get pallet-loads of fuel, delivered by truck.  The hazmat fee will be around $40 (if I remember correctly), but that's for a pallet with a dozen cases of fuel.

I didn't pursue it farther than that, but if you're in a group that's big enough to make quantity buys, and if Powermaster fuel floats your boat, you may want to inquire.

AFAIK you'll still pay the fee, but it won't be much more than the fee on four gallons.

Electric planes are too heavy.  At least, they are after you get the sound system and smell generator installed.

The whole Hazmat shipping fee deal has ticked me off for years because I doubt anyone knows the true definitions and quantities

Try searching the CFR and your head will explode

I live in a rural county for the last 25 years and mail order a crap load of stuff that would make you wonder...

a few (of many more)...examples:

10 + pounds of black powder= ORM-D
36 cans of quilting adhesive=ORM-D
2 cases Clorox gallons=ORM-D
10,000 Winchester Primers=ORM-D
4 gallons of Sig fuel in quarts= ORM-D
TORCO 1 gallon Nitro +1 gallon Methanol= ORM-D

Not a one of thees required a Hazmat fee----- (unless it was hidden in the final price)

But any other source of 1 gallon glow fuels = ORM-D and a $20 ~ $30  separate hazmat fee regardless of quantity ordered.... I really don't get it

I recently bought 5000 Winchester 22 cal cartridges for my brother in Salt Lake city because the price was relatively good and there are ZERO to buy there...(plenty here)

The only legal way to mail them was FedEx or UPS...USPS will not ship ammunition (knowingly)

You must got to a REAL UPS place not a franchises store.... 45 miles later I am there and tell the customer service lady what I want to do...she coached me through using their computer to print a shipping  (ORM-D) label, then wait in line to ship and pay.....41 lbs of ammunition (and packaging) went to UT from TX for $15.99 and NO HAZMAT fee

Can you name other liquids we consumers use with a lower flash point than Glow fuel and no haz mat fees in gallon containers?

Cabellas will send me many gallons of Colman fuel
Ace Hardware will send me gallons of Naptha
WalMart will send me gallons of White Gas

no haz mat fees

and I think of MEK as a hazardous materiel but nee pay a Hazmat fee for it either

Last fuel I ordered was from Sig through my favorite Hobby Shop in Fayetteville (Hayes Hobby)  I got 8 gallons with his fuel order (Sig Dealer for about 50 years).  It cost me about $175 for the 8 gals/Ship/Haz-Mat.  we did a % deal on each item.  I can't really remember the total cost! LL~

I called Aircraft Spruce to inquire about 4 gallons of dope shipped and Haz Mat.  The Lady on the phone had no clue of what I was saying when I asked about shipping the gallons in 4 quarts each.  I had been told buy another customer than although the per gallon cost was a few dollars more, there was no Haz  Mat saving $40 or so.  ?????

I still need to order the clear dope.......

I can tell you  what the suppliers told & did for me if you care to disagree about it taking place,,, I care less. Tell it to the chaplin.
I ordered a 28 gallon batch of fuel from Doug Taffinder & he had it shipped to the yellow freight hub I drove 20 miles & picked it up in my van, Another vender shipped 24 gallons of Sig fuel to my wife's building she works in. Both told me they can ship it freight to a business but not to a residence.
   I hope this helps.

    Hey John,

My wife and I operate a business out of our residence.  Could fuel be shipped to the business which is located in our residence.  My wife is always ordering supplies to operate the business and they are delivered to the business address, also our home address.  Just wondering.    D>K

If you read the post on here about fuels, you will for get about getting a 55 gallon drum of fuel unless you have the containers to put it in.

I'm still using up gallons of 65% pylon racing fuel by mixing it with methanol and oil as required.  The methanol is from local dirt track racers, so I buy 5 gallons at a time to fill my VP fuel jug, and oil they ship without hazmat fees.  Vp sells a really nice container for roughly $20.
