I received a call from my local hobby shop and was informed my four quarts of SIG Lite Clear had arrived. Whooza. 29.95 a quart. :-\

When I called Sig in January, they said it would be shipping in March. A little early good.

That's $120 a gallon........... can use high priced automotive paints for less........
Just checked Aircraft Spruce, Randolph butyrate clear starts at ~$40 a gallon. the non tautening butyrate clear is $43.40 a GALLON........ non tautening TINTED butyrate Clear is $43,60 per gallon.
I have always loved Sig Lite Coat, and I know Sig has to make a profit to stay in business, etc., etc., but at three times the price of a comparable product, I just can't do it anymore...........

Can you say "add lots of thinner and stretch it out?". OH, yes, a tad spensive, but does Randolp make a Lite coat clear? D>K

The link is for what the Lite Coat is (with tint added). They supply it with out tint, also. I have always understood that Sig is made by Randolph, maybe not??

Can't beat their shipping. Last order was placed on Monday, got it on Wednesday. And I understan a gallon now ships for the same price as a quart regarding the Haz Mat charges. It USED TO BE cheaper to buy 4 quarts because of Haz Mat shipping. The "total" cost would be cheaper.

I've posted this before. What you want from Randolph is Stock # A-1690. That is Randolph's untinted, non-tautening clear. They have 2 non-tautening clears and the one you have posted is the W-8350 which is tinted. It is no good for final clear coats.

I use either Randolph's or Certified depending on my mood and the current price when I order. Either works great and is a lot cheaper. Just to clarify, the non-taunting stuff IS Lite Coat.

Thanks for the info. We have all posted similar info before. Of course I knew the link I posted was for tinted. IN fact it says "tinted" in big letters! LOL!! Just happened to be the page I was on while looking it up for Ty. ;D
Of course, if you want a semi transparent blueish (or is it amber??) finish on bare wood, you could use the tinted.......... ;D I use tinted dope for all my substrate and try to use plain old "clear" for final coats.

I just ordered the following from Aircraft Spruce,
1 Gal Certified Butyrate thinner $25.90
1 Gal Certified Butyrate Clear Non Taut dope 39.50
FedEx shipping to Orlando 11.80 no hazmat fees
I was told that they can ship 2 gallons or 4 quarts in a box with no hazmat fees.

Have any of you guys tried Dupont 3608S thinner with the Randolph clear (since it will work well with either Lite Cote or Brodak)?

Sigs web site shows Lite Coat at 24.99 a quart, regular Supercoat clear is 15.99 a quart. Looks like the hobby shop is the reason for the higher price, but they have bills to pay also, minimum order amounts, shipping etc..

Has anyone tried the Prestec High Gloss Poly at their site (Aircraft Spruce)? It is a little expensive, but I looked over at the data and it dries pretty fast. I might give it a try if mine comes out decent enough... S?P

I've used 3608S with Randolph's before. Worked fine. But I prefer to use the thinner that is designed for the paint.

I've used all 3 brands of dope over the years. (No Brodak) Never used any thinner other than 3608S or 3602S...
No problem!

I've been using the Dupont thinner and it works great. I use Randolph dope, Brodak primer and crystal clear.

The "Blind Hog" here. For more than 20 years I have been using 3608S in ALL my dope (all brands, butyrate/nitrate) products on the advice of Windy Urtnowski. :o I have not seen a problem, maybe someone else has but I would like to know what it is. I have never been told why it is a bad idea, and the paint has never known the difference. (and a guy that has had multiple 20 Appearance Point winners might know a bit or two about model painting.) ;D
There is a Dupont 3608"V"S that I will not touch.. That "V" messes everything up! LL~

Yeh, I think I got hold of some of that "V" type thinner, took quite awhile to fix the problems it caused. HB~>

I have 2 quarts of Aerogloss clear. Still good. but no thinner. Anyone know what thinner works with aerogloss besides aerogloss?

Hi Bill, just to clarify the DuPont nomenclature it is the "V3608S" that will not work in dope...just gives you a stringy mess in the can. Not only that buit it won't even clean you spray gun. While the original 3608S & 3602S thinners will work fine for our models (a relatively small area to paint), it dries too fast for application on a full-scale airplane (even the 3602S slow).

The "V" stuff must be for the low VOC requirements or something....... ??? I DID get a gallon of it once, and took about 120 ounces of it back. Not good for anything I tried to use it for, and found that out quickly! LL~
And when I was actually painting full size automobiles, I only used the same manufacturers stuff all the way through. ;D
