SIG Field IS History
« on: April 19, 2025, 08:59:41 PM »
I saw posted over on FB that SIG Field has been sold. A guy posted that he kept his Champ there and had to be out of the hanger by this weekend I think he said. I knew the house was auctioned off, but thought maybe for tax reasons the airport was a separate entity. When we went to the fun fly events that Bob Nelson put on after the C/L contest were ended, there had been a lot of improvements made to the hangers and I think maybe one new one built. I had hopes that it would continue and if I ever got up that way for any other reason, it would be fun to drive by.

Oh if I could only go back again to fly in some of those contests again!! Such a shame!

Any idea as to who? I've kind of always assumed it was privately owned by the Sigafoose's or a connection of anyway. Definitley lots of great memories there, hopefully it doesn't get tilled up and planted.   :(

I don't know the exact disposition of the property, but Hazel was a pretty wise and smart business woman. I would guess that the company owned the airfield at first. Then as the company got sold off numerous times in the later years, the airport was made a separate entity because they rented out some of the hangers for the income to help pay expenses. When the house was put up for auction, I checked that out and did not see any mention of the flying field property, so I guess it may have been put into a trust as Hazel aged. Now she can use proceeds for the sale of each to support her ongoing care. I think she turned 103 this past March?? Things get kind of difficult as we age and acquire property and such. I gave my motorcycle to my brother-in-law.  Can I substitute a full scale airplane instead?

I'm running out of ways to procrastinate writing the last of my undergraduate papers (I graduate next month, then it's on to a masters program), so I did some digging.  Iowa Land Sales and Farm Management had a listing for the house and field for online auction from March 27-April 3.  I emailed the listed Real Estate agent, asking if he had information on what the new owner plans to do with it.  I'll pass on any information I receive.

Back to schoolin'...May 16 is coming up fast...

And he hasn't been the same since!!! He made his first solo flights at about that age, 3 years old. I know I have some video tape of it around here somewhere but have not found it!  I wonder if he's gonna take Snugglebear with him to pick up his diploma!! I actually found a brand new one for him a few years ago for Christmas!! We never went anywhere without the bear!! It had as many miles on it as Sean did going to contests back then.

Well I hate to be the bearer of bad new, but it's as I and most folks have anticipated. I heard back from the real estate manager that is handing the field, and the buyer intends to plow it up and plant soybeans this fall.

If you have never been to SIG Field, it is the only really level and flat acreage for quite a ways around the area outside of town. When standing on it infront of the hangers, and looking around all you see is rolling hills.  I would guess a lot of time, money and effort was put into grading it into the nice strip that it was. At 2600 ft and 105 ft wide it was pretty nice to fly models on and probably really nice to operate full size aircraft from. The south end was pretty wide open, the north end had on low telephone/power line across the road from the fence. I don't recall any modelers flying in there for the contest, but Sean Elliott flew the EAA replica of the Spirit of St. Louis in one year while recruiting volunteers for KidVenture.

As I expected, another result of "progress" in our downward spiraling world, Iowa really needs that few extra acres of farmland.  :(
