SIG Akromaster Plans
« on: December 03, 2023, 07:36:34 AM »
Does anyone have a scan of plans for the SIG Akromaster they could send me? I'm going to build one so my wife and in-laws can give CL a go and try to figure out why I have to vacation in Muncie, Indiana every summer. I have checked Outerzone/Freds Aero to no avail and sadly the SIG website does not have them in stock. I currently live outside the States so a scan/PDF would be ideal. Or even just a template for the ribs and the basic measurements will do.

Thanks!

I asked the same question a couple months ago. It is a little bit of a grey area legally since SIG is still in business. A better solution is to go to Outerzone.co.uk. They have 1236 plans for control line sport planes. They're all free pdfs available for immediate download. You'll find a number of comparable models.

The SIG Akromaster did not come with a traditional set of plans. That's why you can't find them! It came with an instruction sheet. The wing leading edge and trailing edges were notched and the instructions state to lay out the instructions sheet on your building board and use the printed boarder as a way to square up the wing as you assembled it. A common practice, sine the wing and spar stock was longer than needed,  is to make a few extra ribs and add those to the end to increase the wing span and wing area. All the other parts were cut out already or print wood. The fuselage was precut also. I think it might be to someone's advantage to take a kit and make some patterns to pass around for the purpose of scratch building. This has been discussed several times in the last couple of years.. It's a great little model and needs to live on!

Is the Akromaster wing symmetrical? I'm cutting a wing kit from templates and I can't tell if the trailing edge piece should be symmetrical or a little flatter on the bottom.

The leading edge (LE) is symmetrical. The completed wing section (basic rib/LE/TE shape) is symmetrical. I seem to remember the rib trailing cut is a bit skewed, not exactly at a right angle to the centerline of the rib to play nice with the trailing edge (TE).
This is because the TE is NOT an isosceles triangle as it is mass-produced by cutting a rectangular strip of stock across a diagonal. The TE stock in the kit will fit better with the hypotenuse on the board if you are building flat on a board.  I'll check an unbuilt kit to ensure I remember this correctly and report back with a picture or two.

You'll be fine using commercially available TE strip while ensuring each long face lines up with the top/bottom rear edge of the ribs...or use rectangular stock and wood plane/sand the appropriate excess off.
