Can anyone tell me what the measurements are on a Akrobat canopy. I got a old kit handed to me and it is missing the canopy.
I am going to try and make one from a soda bottle.

Here I am again being being sarcastic in some people's eyes, but, wouldn't it be easier to get one from SIG Mfg? Having fun, DOC Holliday

Hi Doc,
for the heck of it I did a quick search on Sig's website and the only Akrobat acessories available are the instruction book and the plastic cowl, so no joy. Which may explain why rootbeard is thinking about molding his own canopy.
However, if I was needing a canopy I would call them to make sure that maybe a single stray canopy might be lurking somewhere in storage. In terms of size I seem to remember that it was about the same size as a Sig Super Chimunk canopy. The original Van Loo Chipmunk kit was a different narrow and long shape. In any event I would call Sig for details before trying to make my own. They may still have the original mold on hand to measure from or if you are really lucky mold a canopy for you. Hey, It is worth a shot.
I recently saw that someone is producing an RC ARF Akrobat but I am not sure of the size, so the canopy may not be scaled right for the Sig kit but it might be worth looking at.
Rootbeard, I wish you best of luck getting a canopy.

Hey Doc, I have never seen you being sarcastic. But I did search the SIG site with no luck. LL~

I have a sig canopy from either the super chipmunk or the akrobat, cant recall which now, its from YEARS ago, I think the ribs are still in the drawer with it. If you email me ( so I remember) when I get home I can take a look and maybe post a picture of what I have?
-
Mark,
Email sent !
I have a green soda bottle. That should look kewl.

Paul,
bad news, the canopy I was thinking of is the one for a Sig Mustang, I know because I found it with the other parts for my mustang. I was sure I had a different one but its not to be found. I just scrounged for a couple hours and have officially decided I dont know where the other one is.
Now sometimes when I do this, I will remember the next day, but alas for right now, Im not able to help you out ,, sorry ::)

Mr. Rootbeard if you send me an Email with your real name and address, I will send you an unmolested virginal canopy out of my sig acrobat kit #CL-16 If that is what you are looking for so that you can get duplicates made. I would like to get a couple of extras if you find some one to make them at a resonable price. Gordon Tarbell , Carmichael CA

Gordon,
The real name is Paul. If you can just put a ruler to it and maybe post a photo? I am going to make one from a plastic soda bottle. I am sure I will make a few. I will post a photo when I am done. If you want one I will send you one for free if you like what you see.
Thanks

Top of tapeline is the formed edge on the original to cut along. Length is 6 3/4" and max height is 1 3/4" at top.
-
Are you sure that's an Akrobat canopy? Looks a lot like an Akromaster canopy from here.
-
OMG! My bad. Thanks for correcting me. Was just not thinking. AKRO-master, -bat, who knew. HB~> HB~> HB~>

LL~ No problem.
Thanks very much for your efforts.

Paul,
I measured my trimmed acrobat canopy. I'd post a picture but I'm not quite that smart. (Maybe I'll be smarter in the morning.) Here are the approximate coordinates of the canopy profile. Using the canopy leading edge and bottom side frame edge as baselines, all measurements are horizontal from the leading edge and vertical from the canopy side frame edge. The canopy is 8.38" long overall. It is 2.75" tall at its tallest, located 3.75" back from the canopy leading edge. The leading edge is 1.13" above the the side frame edge and the angled trim line from the leading edge intersects the side frame edge at 2.00" back from the canopy leading edge. The angled trim line from the side frame edge to the trailing edge starts 6.25" aft of the leading edge and intersects the top contour 8.38" aft of the leading edge at 1.75" above the side frame edge. Width is nominally the fuselage width, of course, about 2.25". Hope this isn't too obtuse. I'll try to post a picture tomorrow.

Thanks Gary
if you can not figure out how to post a picture here you can email them to me.

Does this help Paul ???

Did you look to see if Bill Sawyers makes one for it? Have gotten canopies from him in the past and they are top notch. :)
-
Looks like a reasonable facsimile could be made using a Sig WW11 9" canopy and some creative scissor work. 8)

I am about 100% positive that Bill Sawyer would pull those if he doesn't already. All he needs is a good one, and it isn't damaged in the process, so he will return it to you.
I had a spare one around here somewhere, but I cannot find it. :'(

Bill,
I was just about to post that it would be easy to reproduce it. If I have a good sample that has not been cut I can reproduce them exactly. Because of the time it takes to make the mold, I want to feel sure that I will sell several. I just wonder if it would be better to get one from Sig.

Good thing I came back and reread this. My memory is getting bad. Thought I had what you needed, but, no it is the canopy, wheel pants and cowl of the SIG Super Chipmunk by Mike Stott. The canopy has kind of a pinkish color to it and has never been trimmed. I tried to sell what was left of the kit as I started the wing and got disgusted with it and put it on the shelf. The critters got to the wing and finished it off with a big foot. I do hope you find the canopy you need. DOC Holliday

Bill If Gordon or someone else doesn't send you an unmolested canopy I have one I can send.

Hi Bill,
Sig is no longer listing the canopy AFAIK. So that option seems to be out for now. Paul may or may not be needing one, seems like he actually wants to make one himself. ???

Yep, I think I now have enough pictures and info to cut out a plug. Thanks guys!!!
A one liter green soda bottle (or pop bottle, depending on what state you are in) will be empty by the time I make my plug.
Stay tuned! f~
