Bart Klapinski and Disneyland adventures
« on: January 27, 2013, 03:17:43 PM »
There is a really great article in the February 2013 Model Aviation magazine starting on page 35 of Bart and his years at Disneyland. It will take you back to the 60's in modeling, and is a very enjoyable read. Just a heads up in case you missed it.

I have visited with Bart on several occasions at VSC about his exploits at Disneyland, and thoroughly loved every minute of it. He is so very interesting to talk to and such a nice fellow.

I remember visiting that attraction and sticking around for more than one show. Definitely one of the reasons I'm still flying around in circles after all these years. Nice to see this part of history and Bart recognized. CLP**  8)

The article about Oba St. Clair and the one about the Brodak contest/event were also good...in fact, other than missing the Stunt column this month, there was a lot of good CL coverage in this issue. There was even a mention of CL in the report on the Horizon Hobby event, and it might even be a preview of something new. Jim Fruit's scale racer was sure pretty, and Ted Kraver's Scale column is definitely worth keeping an eye on for building/finishing tips.  :! Steve

I would like to build a C/L circle similar to the flying circle that used to be at Disneyland.  Does anyone know if the surface was constructed of concrete, asphalt, or clay?

       I have received several very nice comments,on my e-mail, about the article in M.A. and wish to thank every one.

             There is a question on this thread regarding the construction of the flight circle at Disneyland. I'm not sure about the base of the circle but, the top coat was a type of slury that was spread on by a large squeegy and appeared to be the same material that was used in the rest of the park. The surface in the circle was then painted.
       I hope this helps a little.

                             Best,
                                         Tempest

Thanks!  Do you know of where I could find a color photo showing the flight circle?

I confess, I was the one who exposed Bart to the staff at AMA.  Very nice presentation Rachelle and Bart.

   There is a cover photo of the Disneyland Flight circle on a Flying Models magazine dated around the 1960s. I have the magazine ,but it is buried some where. Some one may know or be able to retrieve a copy----perhaps Flying Models Magazine or Keith Trostle. I believe it looked the same when Cox took over.

  Hey Bart;
    It's on the cover of September, 1956 of Flying Models magazine. I couldn't find my copy in my file and I hope I didn't lend it out to someone and not get it back! I'll look again in the morning. There was a cover of Model Airplane News in Aug 1959 that had Paul Mantz and a couple of kids, and Paul has a Cox P-40 in his hand and they are standing in front of the shark mouth of a full size P-40. I thought that had something to do with Disneyland, but turns out it didn't. Gotta find that Sept '56 Flying Models!
    Several year ago on one of my first rips to Oskosh, and guy came through the C/L circles and said he worked the Disney display as a kid with the local club, and said he still had a stack of PT-19 wings at home. I got his contact info but never could catch up to him again.
  Type at you later,

I am still looking for the FM cover with the Disneyland circle.  I think I sent it to Keith Trostle.
