Should I or Shouldn't I?
« on: September 07, 2014, 01:20:59 PM »
Decorating a scale model that isn't a scale model, is actually an interesting task.

Because it's not "modeled" after a particular full scale aircraft, you can if you choose, do whatever you like.

For this model, I did copy to some extent, the markings of other P-40's which I found on line.

Now I'm thinking of adding something to the rudder. Tough decision, so I thought I would run it by my fellow modelers.

This photo shows the checks that I'm considering adding to my P-40's rudder.

Enough is enough or could this tiny feature add a bit to the overall appearance?

Looks great to me. Maybe a faux serial number or something but less can often be more.

I'm on the fence for the additional markings.  I like checkerboards, but with the super finish you already have on the ship, I would probably leave it like it is.

Sean,

Thanks for the reply. There is a serial # on the model. RK8002. Or am I missing something?

That number actually belongs under the stab and smaller, but there was no room for it and with the pushrod there it wouldn't be that noticed.

I didn't see it on my phone but I can see it on my ipad. Yeah I'd say it's good to go

It needs some "kill" markings! Red meatballs, Red Stars, or Black Swastikas, (or tanks, ships, trains) would be ok with me. Some folks think the Swastika is evil, but as I have said before, it is 10,000 years old and was only evil for a tiny fraction of that. The Chinese version of "the Red Cross" charity uses a red swastika. It's only a symbol, and I can think of a symbol that offends me a lot more than that one.  H^^ Steve

Steve,

I apologize, that photo is an old one. I added German kill markings since that photo. Here's the new one.

They actually belong on the British P-40. Some anyway.

I believe I'll take Sean's advice and omit the checks on the rudder. A young trained eye, how can you go wrong.

Thanks guys for your replies.

Steve, You're correct about the Swastika. The American Indian also used it, long before Germany.

Why nit pic that kind of detail when you didn't change the shape of the stab or wing tip? No matter what you do to it, even after all this work, the stab and wing tip shapes are so wrong, even for a semi-scale stunt model, that it kills the illusion.  It would have been the simplest and easiest part of the project. P-40s didn't have square stab/elevators or wing tips.
   But that's just me.

Print out your design on paper, lightly tape it to the model, and just look at it for a while. If you decide you like it, do it "for real".

I'd do it just to increase visibility.

Never thought about that.

Interesting.
