Shoestring from Brodak P-40B
« on: September 08, 2011, 07:12:05 AM »
Steve Holt asked me about doing a Shoestring using the Brodak P-40 wing.  This had been done before by Geoff Goodworth, our buddy in Aussi-land.  Even then, I thought I'd get it documented with my latest approach using a foam interior to the fuselage and ribs in the tail surface to keep the whole plane very light.  I used John Brodak's scale Shoestring as the basis for the outline and just scaled that one to fit.  The overall effect is that the nose moment is the same and the tail is stretched about 2 inches.  This increases the TVC from about .450 to .490.  That is in the range of PW's Impact.  The wing tip area was reshaped a little to present a reasonably realistic Shoestring look.
I'll attach the PDF files for you all to gander.

OOPS!  Guess it would be appropriate to remove the wing landing gear parts.  Try this for the wing sheet.

Just as I finish a brodak CG Shoestring.  How am I to justify two shoestrings... I guess the same way I justified 4 Ringmasters.  LOL,Thanks Pat!

Right David.  Better get a P-40 wing on order while Brodak still has them.  The building source is drying up as I understand.  Maybe we need to talk JB into supplying the wing kit only or an ARF Wing only.  Mark Scarborough and I have talked about an event which is a "One Wing Stunt Event" based on the P-40 wing.  For a 40/46 powered plane, there is little competition to that wing.  A person could come up with a lot of designs using that wing.  Maybe just alter the flap shapes and wingtip shape to accomodate other designs.  Mark did a really cool Gee Bee Model Y with the P-40 wing.  It flew very well.

Beautiful plane and I love that wing. John sent me a set of ribs for a P-40 I turned into a lawn dart awhile back so I have a set. I was wondering whether to do another P-40 as the one I resurrected is getting raggedy but I think I'll do the Shoestring instead.

David,
A fresh start is a good plan.  This way, you can use all light wood, do the foam fuselage trick and have a very competitive plane when done.  Let me (us) know how it turns out.  Holler if you need plan copies.

Just to keep the record straight the first P-40 Shoestring was one I built from a scratch and dent ARC I picked up at Brodaks several years ago. Geoff helped me refine it and then wrote an article for Control Line World with a drawing and details of the fuselage. A photo of it was on the cover of CLW a couple issues back... The original idea was from one of our club members Tom Martin, when I asked him what he would do with a P-40 wing he said "Looks like a shoestring to me". He still teases me about not putting the wheel pants on.

I'm hooked.  Yes the P-40 I got was a giveaway from another club member that after loosing power at the top of a wing over. Was going to trash it. I was the guy that rebuilt it and flew it a couple of times before crashing hard myself.  I've loved the way it flew but its been broke few times so time to start fresh.

Yep, it's been done. From what I've heard a great flier too. ;D

I've got an ARC P-40 kit stashed away that will eventually get bashed into something other than a P-40. VD~ I haven't had an irresistable idea for it yet though.

Bob,
Thanks for getting your beautiful Shoestring in on this thread.  I didn't have my references here to know who built the one Geoff did the ACAD details on.  You were a huge amount of inspiration on making up these plans.  The Shoestring is a slam-dunk for this mod.
OK, WW!  Now what is that little brain cell conjuring up?  Perhaps something in P-47?  You know how our little particles of brain cells do when rattling around inside that cavity.  I would volunteer to do some ACAD stuff if you would like.

G'day guys, greetings from Oz.

Here is the Shoestring built by my clubmate Dennis Percival to my drawings. There was a brief article about it in CL World after the feature article on Bob's model

To build the Shoestring, Dennis needed Pat's drawings for the wing and that meant both sheets of the P-40.

A prolific builder with plans for two similar models, Dennis was faced with a dilemma so he compromised and built both. His P-40 is in the background.

David, the two models are different sizes and fly very differently so there is no excuse for not have the two Shoestrings in the different sizes.

Wow! One of the nicest looking profiles I've ever seen. My Brodack P-40 is jealous.

Here is Keith Sandberg's "Hot Shot", his original design built around a Brodak ARC P-40 wing...

Very nice Wwwarbird!
Too bad an arc wing kit doesn't seem to be available.
Are the plans available for download anywhere?
