what is the best way to ship kit boxs  UPS or POSTAL

Bob I will try to answer your question.  Years back when I was producing kits with RSM, I tried just about all of the carriers and had less damage and faster delivery with Priority Mail.  This was before Pirate Ship and some other 3rd party shippers.  Today, with rates sky high, it is probably a crap shoot.  If I were still shipping kits, I would probably still use USPS Priority Mail.  Rates everywhere are totally ridiculous now..

When I shipped my stuff, I shipped them USPS cheapest with tracking.  I would wrap the kit boxes in cardboard and ship them that way.  A little extra armor without added size and expense.

It's really easy to set up an account with Pirateship.com. That way you have the best of both worlds. When you put in the destination zip code, along with dimensions and weight, it gives you all options available. At first, they only did USPS, but now also offer UPS. I have done shipments where, depending on the zip code, UPS was half the cost of the Post Office. When you decide what is best, pay the payment for the label comes out of what ever credit card or PayPal account you sent it up with. It's ALWAYS been cheaper than the Post Office web site and their calculator. After paying for the label, just print it out and drop it off at the proper facility. Some people I have dealt with don't like UPS, so I ask anyone I deal with if they have a preference. and I tell them the actual cost. When it ships I email them the tracking numbers and such. If they supply a cell number and an email address, they can get alerts as to the progress of their package. Very convenient and the web site has upgraded and improved as time has gone by. I think it's the only way to go, myself. I also like to do a cardboard wrap around a kit box for protection. It keeps the cost down over what an over size box would cost and they are hard to find. If it's two kits the same size, I stack them with the tops facing each other and wrap with stretch wrap. That is that clear stretchy stuff they use on pallet loads but you can get it in smaller, short rolls to apply by hand to small items. Then I wrap the bundle with cardboard. I have sent out several kits and a lot of excess Cox stuff since I retired and have had no issues, knock on wood!!

USPS has a max   dimension, 24 inches I think, that once you hit that the price triples.
I may be wrong but I doubt it.

Yes, which is why the UPS offering that pirateship has gives a superior rate.

UPS gets in there with some add ons also. One of the last packages I sent out, the cheaper UPS option got almost as much as the USPS with some add on fees and taxes that I never saw before. I am proceeding with caution on future dealings, but in the past, I have shipped stuff for half the USPS rate with UPS and no add ons.

I buy my stuff from Balsa USA, located up in The UP.

They know more than anybody about shipping kits and wood.

36" is the maximum length before getting into premium pricing.

They say UPS is the best option.

Shipping a 48" kit from The UP to The Left Coast should cost about $40 US.

Paul,

If it helps, a previous post shows the exact dimensions that get the premium pricing as USPS.

As far as shipping from the UP, your 48" kit example demonstrates another point.  While UPS is superior for items that hit the USPS length charges (22" and 30"), USPS is superior for kit boxes that measure 50".  Pirateship does a good job comparing.

Rates to 90210 in CA from the UP in MI are compared below.  For 8 lbs, 50x8x5, it's well under $40.

I cheat. Fortunate to have a local “pack and mail” business near by. They won’t insure what they don’t pack, but their rates for packing are very reasonable. They search for best rate among several carriers or you can specify a specific carrier if it matters to your customer. They’ve saved me lots of time and money.

Bob,
I have used Pirate Ship (https://ship.pirateship.com/) for a few years now and have had excellent service. They use the major shippers but have bulk rate pricing.

I can give you current information on shipping a kit from 2 days ago.  I sold a guy a PICA 1/5 scale Aeronca Sedan kit.  The terms of the sale were, he send payment and shipping label.  I gave him the weight and dimensions.   I wrapped the kit in heavy duty "shipping" paper.  When I got to UPS the clerk (DEI) said I had to put the kit in another box and THEY would do it.  I said no, I wanted it sent as is.  They said your next option is for them to wrap the entire box with shipping tape.  I paid them to do that, so I could get it sent.   I have never had a package rejected because it was wrapped with shipping paper.
