Shipping again
« on: January 04, 2019, 08:21:36 AM »
From the U.S. to Canada. I ordered  some ribs and other other parts from Brodak and got an e-mail saying USPS won't let them ship (to Canada) regular or first class anymore, so a package that once cost about 12 to 17 bucks to ship is now $37.00, I kid you not, this is not good.  '' >:( HB~>

Edit: Holy cow no sooner do I post this, I get an e-mail from Tru Turn, I ordered a prop nut set for a Saito 91, are  you ready? All international orders now cost $30.00 to ship, doesn't matter what it is!!  HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~> HB~>

Has it changed for personal items, or from a person to a person? Is that just some odd business decision? Maybe someone in the states could take it to the PO and mail it to you?

Dwayne, I started running in to this some time back.  The only option I have now when shipping kits outside of the US is by Priority International Mail.  That is if I use the Postal Service which I always do because I learned the hard way trying to use UPS and FED X.

Even here in the states, shipping costs have become a major factor in the price of a kit.  USPS Priority mail is on average $20.00 just to ship a single kit box.  I do have the option within the US to ship a kit by parcel post but it is a crap shoot whether the kit will make it to its destination intact.

Dwayne,
Kingston is not far from the U.S. . I’m very close to the border and have a “tame” mailbox in the U.S. ...just for this reason . You save shipping, brokerages and most times duties and/or taxes plus you get a cheap tank of gas .

We could get wealthy running spinners and stuff across the border until they wise up and build a wall.

USPS.com shows First Class Package International Service as their most economical service.  Up to 4 pounds, 36" total dimensions, from $10 to up to $28 retail (commercial users get a bit if a break).  Maybe someone at Brodaks made an error.  Most retailers treat shipping costs as a profit centre and mark it up appropriately.  That's OK as long as it's reasonable, after all, someone has to cover the cost of the packaging supplies.  If it's too high then it's just a money grab.  Maybe they are not interested in international customers.

Mike - if the cost of shipping kits is getting too expensive maybe it's time to think "inside" the box.  What parts in a kit absolutely have to be 36" long?  Can the kits be designed to fit inside a smaller cheaper to mail package?  I'd be willing to glue a few parts together if I saves me $40 or more in shipping.

I agree with Paul.m You cottage industry guys do a great job, but between the shipping costs and the fact that the package can be damaged with no real recourse, it may make sense to think along the lines of the short kit route and and/or splicing any long stock. That is nothing new, if you have ever built an old Sterling, or Jetco kit! I got a pretty good collection of kits and have pulled way back on adding to it for a lot of reasons, but the cost of shipping and the damage that some of the kits receive that is no fault of the shipper is the leading factor. The postal service is down right incompetent as far as I'm concerned. I have gotten kits that looked like they were run over by a car, with actual tire marks on the box! The post office said "That is the way we got it."!!!!!  I got a Christmas card from my older sister, and it was a card that included a nice laser cut wood Christmas tree ornament. When we got the card, the end of the envelope was neatly sliced open, and the ornament was obviously removed, causing damage, then stuffed back into the card and envelope. No tape or anything the secure it. Some one cut the envelope to see what was inside, then when it didn't seem like anything they could pawn of sell, they put it back! I have heard lots of similar stories from friends and relatives. Lots of thievery in the good old USPS!!

I remember talking to Walt Umland several times about his kits and the idea of short kits.   Folded plans with laser cut parts would be fine with me.  I would still go with $100.00 dollar price tag.   Maybe slightly more. D>K

Dan, next time you are talking with Eric Rule, ask him about the 6 Ringmaster kits I sent to Alaska that kept disappearing.  I mean we sent them one at a time and each time they would disappear, After 6, we quit sending them and Eric Launched an investigation with the Feds.  I am sure he will remember it.  This happened a few years back.  Someone at the post office up there stole them.

My Toronto friends can have it shipped to me and come down and pick it up, or I can meet you in Buffalo. I've done tires for my Canadian friends too. However you get it across the border is not my concern!

Recently had a problem with shipping also. Ordered some clothes for wife's birthday present. The vendor shipped by UPS, but UPS only delivered the pkg. to our local PO, less than 2 miles from my house. The PO stored it for a week before they decided to make the delivery. The UPS tracking stopped at the PO and the PO cleverly put their label over the UPS tracking number...smart. There was no more tracking, and the USPS couldn't find the package. Second real problem with USPS in 40+ years, but still sucked. In the future, I will do what I can to avoid using two different shipping organizations for a single trip, and hope to be able to arrange that in the future, and suggest y'all do the same!  '' Steve

I offer a Ringmaster S1 kit for overseas sales that ships in a 24" box. The kits for short boxes cost more, there is more CAD work and cutting time. That being said, they are still less than kit cost and shipping a 36" package outside of the USA.

You might ask Brodak to check again.  I ship all over the world; First Class Package International Service is available and economical by comparison to the alternatives.  Here are the limitations to Canada:

Other than rolls: Max. length 24", max length, height and depth (thickness) combined 36"
Rolls: Max. length 36". Max length and twice the diameter combined 42"

Value of contents can not exceed $400.00

Good luck!

Dennis
