Scenes from Polk City Stunt May 5-6 2012
« on: May 06, 2012, 06:48:13 PM »
Here are some photos from the Stunt contest this weekend in Polk City, IA. It was cloudy Saturday morning with clearing skies around noon. Then it got hot and muggy with the breeze picking up to a level commanding your attention, and your airplane. ;D

Sunday was scheduled to start about 8:30am but the plug got pulled just before that with heavy thunderstorms and high winds quickly approaching the area. We all got an early start on the drive home. :(

Thanks to the entire Polk City gang for their efforts with hosting this contest. It is always a fun and very well organized event, and the field was in excellent shape. Too mad Mother Nature spoiled the fun.

I have also posted some pics from Carrier competiton over in the Carrier section here on Stunthangar:

Thanks for the great pics.  Melvin called me Saturday evening to tell  me about the high temps and wind.  I spent the day rebuilding the trailer for hauling my mower. H^^

Winds were maybe 7-10 mph, temp was ~80, Humidity was a little high though.  Winds were out of the east, however, and that causes some turbulance on the stunt circles, but all in all, it was a gorgeous day.  As for Sunday, by 9:30, it was sunny, the grass was drying out and until about 3:30 it was a nicer day than Saturday - of course we were mostly all home by then.

Yeah, I kind of figured that it would all pass fairly quickly and then get nice, typical luck. I left the field just as the storm line moved over our heads on it's way in, it was pretty hairy for a while heading north on I-35. In hindsight, we could have told everyone to go have breakfast and then stop back at 10:00am, still would have been done by 2:00 or 3:00 at the latest. Not complaining Mike, just a thought. ;D

Had a great time at Polk City.  Great to see some friends I do not see at other contests.

This reminds of years ago when the Sky Devils would hold their annual two day meet at Swope Park in KCMo.   Everybody was out early and putting up practice flights.  Someone said they heard on the radio(remember those) that a storm was coming.  So everybody loaded up except for one individual who is no longer with us and is still missed.  Leroy Kline left his Nobler set out.  Surprised it didn't get blown away.   Wind and rain so hard cold not see the circle.   About 20 minutes and the sun was out.   Turned out to be one great day of flying.  Yes Leroy had to pour water out of the Nobler and it still flew.

Another year at the annual I ran carrier in a drizzling rain while others ran stunt and combat.   Soaking wet at the out door picnic that evening.   Also we had racing going on. H^^
