I've never checked the thickness, but I've cut up empty one gallon fuel cans and used that stock. Just make sure it is completely empty and "aired out" before putting grinder to it . . . ask me why.  n~ n~

McMaster Carr has the sheets and rolls if need.
HOWEVER, for the past few years I just order Tank Kits from Brodak and solder my own. Support the hobby.

But...

Do you want tin (commonly sold as 'tin'), or do you want tinned steel (commonly sold as 'tin').  That 1 gallon fuel can is made of tinned steel, if you can find metal fuel cans any more.  My Perfect brand fuel tanks certainly attract magnets, so they're plated steel.

McMaster sells tin, and I think they mean tin, not tinned steel.  K&S sells tin, but I'm not sure at all whether they mean pure tin or tinned steel, nor, for that matter, do I have any confidence that they know themselves.

Is there any reason not to use brass sheet?

Fuel cans are a pain because of the paint on one side and the fuel on the other.  Furthermore, they're just about extinct due to plastic jugs.

On the other other hand, one gallon Randolph dope thinner cans are PERFECT.  Clean on both sides and still readily available.

Lots of gallon cans out there.  Acetone and lacquer thinner from Home Depot still comes in cans. :)

K&S is tinned steel as a magnate will pick up the pieces.  It is also easy to solder. Just wish they had it in bigger sheets.   H^^

I bought .007" sheet CRES from McM.-Carr. It's 8" x 12"...and I don't recall if it's 304 or 303. Solder with Sta-Brite low temp silver solder. Maybe this weekend, I'll get a round tuit.  LL~ Steve

Okay
Last time I tell everyone about this TIN PLATE, not brass not tin but quality TINPLATE
Same quality as the K&S but comes in sheets  500 mm x 300 mm and .2 mm thick or in imperial units 19.68 inches x 11.8 inches and 0.008" thick
It comes in a pack of 10, yes 10 sheets and is only US $ 32 for the 10 sheets. Or $3.20 per sheet, what are you paying for the K&S sheets?
The quality is so much better than old tins, try it, it's the best.
Here is the link for you guys in the USA ;  http://www.alliedelec.com/search/productdetail.aspx?SKU=090SPEC&MPN=KOTZP682444
Only trying to share what I've found.
Cheers John
