Here's some progress from the past week doing finishing work on the Shark 402...
-
Finishing the rudder off...
-
A little Miami Blue on the nose...
-
A little grey with some black mixed in for the canopy...
-
A little more Miami Blue on the wings...
-
Starting in on some graphics. I'm "cheating" and using some of the military block lettering from Major Decal and star insignia decals from Sig. I put these type of decals on with soapy water and then squeegee them out...
-
Gettin' there...
-
A few more small details and we'll be ready for clear... y1

Being a fan of Pats designs,, I gotta say, this interpretation is pretty awesome,,
your not a navy fan by any chance are ya? hmm PBY, now this?
BTW, sent a link to Pat, so he can enjoy your rendition of his design too,,

Very slick, Wayne! Nice to see your iteration with the Ringmaster tail. I guess that makes it a Sharkmaster 402, now. You will find this one to be a top performer with a 25 on it. Thanks for showing us your workmanship and imagination.

Thanks guys, this one will have an OS .35-S on it. y1

Hope it flies as well as it looks. I truly like it. #^ #^ #^ #^ H^^

Mark, you ought to see his Clown/Wildcat-Buffalo!
Beautiful workmanship, I'm very jealous. VD~

Brian,
Wow, that was a long time ago. Did I ever post pics of that one?
-
Yep, and you inspired me to build one like it. ;D Doesn't look as good as yours, though. :'( Keep up the warbirds and faux warbirds (maybe a P-39????).
-
Where is that Clown post Brian?
A P-39 huh? That's one I've considered many times. I actually have a N.I.B. Larry Richards repro 48" Midwest P-63 on the shelf that is a beautiful kit. I've also got an original N.I.B. 33" Midwest P-39 kit. Last year from a friend I picked up an old scratchbuilt Walt Pyron P-39 that I just had to bolt a Fox .35 onto it, patch a couple little spots and go fly. It was built back in the mid 70's so I only flew it a few times and will probably just keep it hanging on the wall now. It's just too cool of an old model though to beat up after surviving this long. I thought about stripping and refinishing it but it's a pretty nice build for the era and I'm just going to leave it alone for old times sake.
I've got a ton of new ideas for Warbird type models, they come way faster than I can build them. A P-39 or P-63 is on the list at some point. All I can say at this point is stay tuned! y1

You posted it on Oct 7, 2006. I would link it if I knew how, but I'm slightly computer illiterate ~^. It comes up as the 3rd entry under Flying Clown search. I'm hoping that maybe somebody like Brodak will issue a copy of the Midwest 33" Airacobra and BF109. I like .15 size planes. I've had some success with a TT.09 powered Brodak Jr. Lightning Streak. TT.09s are cheap, economical and very powerful. BTW did I mention cheap?
-
Beautiful plane and workmanship. I really like the mods you did to it. y1

Nice job Wayne, the 402 is a great sport flier. The layout reminds me very much of the old Guillow Galaxy design which I very much enjoyed back in the '50s and '60s.

Ok thanks, here it is... ;D

Your paint job represents the leader of Blue section or the third section and needs a sold blue line around the aft portion of the fuselage. Just saying. H^^
Interesting, but it does have a blue line around the aft fuse. I just fudged everything to generally represent a typical pre-war Navy scheme.
(BTW, this is a really old post I revived by accident last night)

How did or does it fly? Did you find the motor to work well with it?

Which plane?

Wayne, I spent several years in a research lab working near a chemist who frequently reminded us, "You can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear".
That may be, but I think you could make that ear look pretty darned good!

I think I am a bit confused. So either plane, if both have been flown, how did they fly?

The 402 is a great all around sport/stunt flyer. A great mid-size stunt trainer too. Early on I got rid of the 35-S because it always wanted to run away. I tried three different S motors, many different props and tanks, and nothing helped at all. I finally replaced it with an FP.35 and then it was happy. If I ever built another I think I'd try an LA or FP .25, it would save a bit of weight and probably be an ideal combo.
The Flying Clown was really a lot of fun, the LA.15 was a perfect match for it. The plane would happily go anywhere you pointed it. I used .012 x 48' lines. I was bummed when it got damaged in my shop and would love to build another one someday.

Thanks for replying. I have two Shark 402's, one with an LA-25 and another with an FP-25. Both are too fast. I am going to try some different propellers. APC 9.625x3.25, 10-3 and 10-4. and see what happens We are in the cold season right now. I wondered about how the 35-S worked. I don't have run-away with either of these two engines. I know I can try longer lines also.
-
I use an OS 25LA on my Shark w/ 9-4 APC prop, and fly it on 60' lines. The 9-4 prop works well.

Sounds like a good combo. y1

Had a Magnum .25 on my 402, replaced it with a .21, much better, had to run the .25 in a solid four stroke
-
A motor setup that has been a consistent solution is the FP/LA 25 swinging a 10-4 GF Master Airscrew. This prop is a little wider than other 10” props. The overall effect is to control the speed with more prop blade and a happy pitch. More traction (as Mark Scarborough says) is achieved for a more consistent speed in the maneuvers.
BTW, if your 35S wants to run away, consider adding more castor to your fuel and/or reducing the venturi size down some. Richard Oliver suggested more layers of pantyhose filters as a poor man’s restrictor. Clever these guys.
Let us know how this works. Possibly start a thread for the run away subject itself.

Thanks for the thoughts Pat but I solved my 35-S troubles a long time ago now, I sold them all. As an added bonus, it saves me the embarrassment of having to purchase pantyhose. ;D
