Caster oil addition
« on: June 07, 2020, 01:08:15 PM »
I have full gallon RC fuel with 18% total oil. Want to boost oil to 22% to match Powermaster 10-22. How much more caster do I need to add? Thx

Add 6.5 oz of castor to the full gallon to get a total of 22% oil.  Nitro content will be reduced to 9.5%.

The calculator says to add 6.2 oz .    You will end up with 22% oil and 9.5% Nitro

       Hi Lyle

As a brain dead guy on even arithmetic, I could get hung out to dry by the mathamaticians on here. But as a general rule, one ounce of castor to a gallon raises the oil content one percent by volume. The results seem to be close enough.

Not trying to be picky, but adding one ounce of castor to one gallon of fuel increases the oil content by 0.78%.  May work if that is the only increase desired.  However, if adding "several" more ounces of castor to get "several" percentage points in oil content, that "close enough" approach may not get the results desired.  For example, adding 4 ounces of castor will increase the oil content 3.1%.  That is good if that is what is desired.  It helps to know what you are doing.

How about if we start yet another argument on whether to measure by weight or by volume!

(Let's not)

I do it the hard way.  Calculate percentages of each component, by weight.  Knowing the existing weight AND percentage oil in the original mix, add enough oil to increase weight of total oil to desired number.

The resultant total volume (weight) will be greater than original, throwing the numbers off by "a bit".  i DON'T SWEAT THE SMALL STUFF.

Adding 6 or 8 oz. of castor oil would be fine.  y1 Steve
