Title: See my Latest Christmas Build
Post by: Harleyman on December 20, 2010, 06:42:29 PM
OK, so I cannot fly it on wires, no motor, etc.  But I hear he does fly.    ;D

This year, my family decided not to exchange gifts for Christmas.  Instead, we either make something or do something nice for the person, we drew from a hat.
I have a hard time doing nice things, so I had no other choice.   >:D
I've been carving Santas for about 15 years now.  This type of carving style is my favorite, it's called "Scandinavian Flat Plane Carving".  I like this style for it's simplicity and no need for sanding.  Just carve and paint.
Do any of you guys dabble in a bit of wood carving also?

My old band director took up carving.  She had some nice tools.  Mostly musical instruments on a 12/18 hunk of poplar, I believe.  Good stuff.

I carved my initials into her desk in one of my more mettlesome moments.  About 3" tall, with Xacto tools.  She made me fill it with plastic wood and sand it nice and flush.  But, trust me, they were there.  Forever to stand out in the veneer.

We met for breakfast lunch and dinner at a Cracker Barrel a few months ago in Gulfport.  35 years?  Many laughs.  Best teacher I ever had.  Took 19-20 years to find her.  They gave her the desk on retirement.  My initials are just to the right of her keyboard, now.  I'm having her up in the spring to do the DC thing.  She uses swear words now.  Imagine that.

For what it are worth, I like carving wingtips with my Wilkro plane.  Those blades I got from Israel were the best, btw.

You're very talented, Chris!  Very nice work. y1

I don't do much carving anymore out side of building models.

Gee, Chris I wish I would have know that.  My dad carved a lot, and he would have loved to meet you.

A lot of bass blanks still up in the atic at moms, and most of his tools.

Some waterfowl but mostly song birds ( over 100) .  He gave or sold most of his carvings but  I still have a few.

The santa is very nice.  When I need  a pilot carved, I will know who to ask...... :##

It takes a very special skill that I don't have.

Dave
