Control Line General Rules
« on: January 11, 2008, 09:49:44 AM »
After being corrected by Marvin,  I reread the general rules for CL again and then went to the Precision Aerobatics rules and looked at them.  I had already knew about the max weight limits for racing and carrier.  But, how many knew there is a weight limit for the planes we fly in Precision Aerobatics.  Yes I know that they are not weighed during or at contests that I have ever seen.  Of course then again the weight limit may be for electric only, but, it does say plane with batteries and planes minus fuel.  Of course I would love to see someone of normal stature fly a 7+ pound airplane in aerobatics.  Now lets keep this discussion clean.  DOC Holliday

Yeah Doc,  that 7.5 lb limit has been in there for AGES!!  Seems a mite rediculious to me 120 oz??  That is considerably more than Paul Walker's B-17. I always thought a 5 lb limit would be more realistic, but now with the engine size limits being upped to .90s,, maybe the 7.5 lb limit may not be so unrealistic.  Gad I would hate to have to hang on to a 7 pounder in a 20 MPH breeze--- especially during the bottom half of a verticle eight.

Think we should entertain a Rules proposal to limit weights of stunt models to 3.5 lbs??  That might get "model airplanes" back to the sizes OF model airplanes--- not the behemoths of today that have the power and size to carry a small child or a large cat.
  Just joking of course.

HI Doc

I have flown stunt planes that weighed as much as 110 ounces  and have seen many that weighed over 100 ounces fly, even at the NATs.  So there are planes out there that push that rule.

I was sitting next Paul W. at the Nats when he filled out his
info sheet from Noel Drindak for the B-17. If I remember correctly
he penciled in 105 oz., or somewhere in that neighborhood.

Just to set the record straight about the past and current rules for the weight limit of CLPA models.

For a number of years prior to 2005, the AMA rulebook for CLPA stated that "There is no maximum model weight".  This was in the rulebook since the early 90's if not to sometime back to the 80's.  This is not to be confused with the General Control Line rules in the current rulebook as well as the rulebook prior to 2005 which limit Control Line models to a flying weight of no more than four pounds unless otherwise permitted under specific event rules.  As early as 1972, there was no maximum weight specified in the rulebook for any CL model and for CLPA, the lines sizes were specified based on engine displacement and the pull test was 10G's.

When our AMA rules adopted the FAI engine displacement limits, including the "non-adjustment" provision for "4-stroke cycle engines"  and the provisions for electrics in the 2005 rulebook, the FAI "Maximum model weight" was established at 3.5 kg which translates to 7 lbs, 11 oz, or 123 oz.  This limit applies to all CLPA models whether powered by electrics or by IC engines.

Maybe that three-year period from 2005 to present on Marvin's time scale translates to "AGES!"  Interesting.

It is also interesting that some want our AMA rulebook to adopt the FAI F2B rules across the board, yet others find fault in those sections in our AMA rulebook that already align with the FAI rules.

I think it would be great if we would adopt the FAI F2B rules.
I am disappointed in the recent voting on this subject. But,
this cetrainly isn't enough to keep me from competing. I am
working on a new Saturn right now. Time to go sand.

Put a note on your board for the next rules cycle.  I too wished at least one of the proposals pertaining to BOM would have passed.  Now if we would have a weight limit in precision aerobatics like the rest of the events, we probably would not be running or attempting to run .90+ size engines.  Now for the proposals that I gave no preference for is because the guys in my district did not get the word to me.  DOC Holliday
