Brodak Jr. Lightening Streak
« on: March 19, 2016, 09:35:12 AM »
While I hammer away at the Akromaster I ant help of think on what I would want to build next. I know I have a Ringmaster in my future but having only flown a "big boy" plane once being an OLD King Kobra at Dave R. place many moons back.  I think I need something in the midsize range before I make that solid jump.

Was looking at Brodaks Jr. Lightening streak as its on sale and seems like a much more enjoying build than that Akromaster lol.

I already have engine options as I have a OS .10 MAX and the Enya .15 IV.  Im just curious to how it handles and is it worth it? For the price I know Im gona get alot of hell yeas lol.

Go for it. I just got one on sale. My forth. Fab fun with an FP15. But needed significant tail weight even with a tongue muffler. Also fast. I just bought an Enya 09 to see how less nose weight and slower speed feel. Maybe a sport Stunter. The Enya 15 should work. Slower than an Fp. The 10 might be more efficient. I'm going to try the 09 Enya on 45' spider wire.

I have a Brodak Jr.Lighting Streak kit.  Have had it several years but haven't started construction on it yet.  Any of the older .15 engines should be plenty of power for this plane.  Since it closely resembles the Top Flite Jr. Flight Streak, with a few minor styling changes, I suspect that it will fly about the same as the Jr. Flight Streak.  I am looking at using an O.S. Max .15 III, a K&B Torpedo ,15 greenhead or a Fox .15 slant plug engine.  Of course, a lot depends on whether the FAA will let us fly our control line planes 52 feet high above the ground without throwing us in a federal prison cell and/or hitting us with a $250,000 fine.  Ah yes, there is nothing like living in the "land of the free and the home of the brave".       D>K      For those who might be dissatisfied.....click on the site below:

The. Enya is gona be mounted on the Akromaster after I make some room for it.

Figured the OS.10 would be pretty ideal for it.. it has the standard muffler.

These planes boogie. There's room for a 2 ounce chicken hopper. A lean run will tie up the circle long enough to @#$% off your friends.

I've been using one of those as a 15 carrier plane for the last ten years.  Works good.  No need for a kit.   It's a very simple build.  I made two set of ribs and still have the second set.  Maybe I'll assemble the second Lightning Streak when I get time.

I also built three Sig (kit) Akromasters.  Also good planes.  I used K&B and Rossi 15's on the first two and an LA15 on the current one.

I have one that is at least 20 yrs old, covered in Polyspan, crashed at least 50 times training kids, and powered by everything from a Cox medallion .09, Fox .15 slant plug, OS .10 and .15.  Good flying honest plane, great for getting past the crashing stuff like reverse wingover, inverted, etc.

The .15 was too much, even propped down with a 8x3 or 7x4 it was too fast on 52' lines and to much line bow on 60". The .10 was good- but needed a bunch of tail weight- the Fox .15 with no muffler balanced good, but was a bit weak for good performance. The Medallion .09 was a really good combo- but suffered from tank draw issues w/o muffler pressure, and I did not want to drill the front housing pressure tap - last one I did that to cracked at the pressure tap.

Bottom line, you can put any of the engines you have on it and it will fly well, play with prop size and line length to get it flying at a good speed with adequate tension, ( .012 lines work great). Tank size mounting can be a challenge, but the small Hayes tank works pretty good.

Enjoy, and don't forget that after your Ringmaster- maybe a Shoestring or an Oriental will do you well.
