Title: Screw size
Post by: peabody on May 13, 2018, 06:34:53 AM
Help on the screw size on Great Planes nylon spinners with aluminum backplates?
Besides the awful Phillips heads which I strip first time....I've lost one.

Thanks

Here's what I do: Throw away those screws that come with them. Drill one of the spokes and tap it for 4-40 X 1/4" cap heads and you're ready to go.

I believe it is a 3mm and maybe a JIS for the screwdriver bit.  You can replace them with 3mm internal hex head screws if you like.

You can get away with just putting a 4-40 socket head screw in the existing hole.  It is aluminum, yes it should be drilled out but a little persuasion and the 4-40 will go in.  Or use a tap on the existing hole.  Or, get a
M3 socket head cap screw from your local fastener supplier.  Microfasteners will have them as well as McMaster Carr.  There are probably more "ors" but one of the above will get the job done.

I'll try the 4-40s if I have them short enough

Go to Ace Hardware with the nut or whatever & find what you need.

3mm/4/40? What's the diameter of this spinner?

Local hobby shops should have 3mm socket head screws.  DuBro supplies them.

I just checked one that I have. The screws are M3.

I tapped the backplate for 4/40 and used 1/4" 4-40 screws

M3's are available at most GOOD hardware stores and you won't risk screwing up your spinner!
