Scoring Question
« on: June 21, 2007, 11:17:37 AM »

Bubba B. Bellcranque VIII graduates from Beginner and enters his first contest as an Intermediate.  As he starts his pattern, he is afflicted with temporary amnesia, as in a soap opera, and thinks he is still a Beginner.  Halfway into his first inside loop he snaps out of it and realizes he has flown a Beginner wingover, rather than a reverse wingover.  How many points is he entitled to for the wingover?   D>K

Bubba better hope there's a 2nd round!  %^@

In Intermediate the official flight starts when you come out of the reverse wingover upside down.  He was simply flying some maneuvers to see if all is well.  He can now do the reverse wingover and proceed along hoping he will be able to finish the pattern before running out of fuel.  H^^

Or after the flight, and his pit man retrieves his airplane,, informs him of the misdead, he tells the judges that he didnt like his engine run so it was an attempt, one of three for two officials right?

And the winner is rules expert Jim Thomerson.  Good point by Randy--the guy is a newbie and most likely in for a surprise after the flight when he discovers that the judges have given him-->  points: 0,  attempts: 1    Another lesson learned in the School of Hard Knocks.    y1

Happened at Brodak, Int flyer forgot the reverse wing over and went straight into loops. Finished the flight thinking he completely blew it until we told him it was simply an attempt. Can't remember who it was but he was pretty happy.

A certain Top 20 flier did this at a contest last summer while I was judging. We didn't score his flight, charged him with an attempt. Same contest, a past World Champs competitor burned two attempts for his first round flight, then buzzed the prop on takeoff for his 2nd round flight. Wisely, he waved off the flight (throat slashing motion), then realized it was his last attempt, and proceeded to fly the pattern. We were not inclined to notice. I don't know of any hand signal that rescinds a throat slashing signal, but maybe that famous Italian one?  LL~  Steve

Hmmmm,

One more time can someone explain to me why it was such a GREAT idea to eliminate hand signal signifying intention to fly?

"Steve,

Kim"

We noticed the buzz job on takeoff, and we noticed the throat slashing hand signal. We watched the rest of the program and enjoyed it, sans pressure of assigning scores to the tricks.  LL~ Steve

The wingover thing has happened today while judging ADV at SIG.  Randi and I watched until the person landed.  Then we informed he had taken an attempt and we were moving him down two positions in the order.  Must have had at least 6 different ADV fliers make big mistakes that made for zero pattern points and a lot of 0's during the pattern.  Results should be posted somewhere.  DOC Holliday
