Title: Score!
Post by: Gary Dowler on July 14, 2019, 07:02:44 PM
A chance to revisit a project from many years ago came my way today.  Long story short, I got a Sig Super Chipmunk kit on fleabay for $76!  Unopened older kit.  This should prove a great tune up build before the SV-11.

At one point last year there was a discussion in here somewhere of mods to make on the SupChip that would improve it. I stink at finding things. If anyone finds that thread before I manage to stumble across it, can you send me a link?

I'm thinking a 46LA on it.  Thoughts?

Gary

YES!!  You have my thanks!!!   For reasons I cannot fathom, my ability to use search features on websites to find things is, for lack of a better word, terrible!

It's called Google-Fu, and mine is pretty spotty.  Sometimes I find what I want, other times I just can't.

Another Super Chipmunk and a VanLoo version are on my want to build list. The only thing I can add to Dave's modifications, is notch the ribs for bigger leading edge stock if you can so you can make the leading edge more round than it shows on the plans. Also, do the motor mount thing to help support the cowling. The plastic parts are not that heavy and look great when finished. On my next one, I will try to install eyelets to take the abuse of mounting and vibration. Maybe even rubber grommets with eyelets in the middle like R/C servos are mounted. that way you can torque the screw into the eyelet and not crunch the plastic, and if done correctly will look nice. Two on each side and two in the front. Glue the plastic together as per instructions, and then maybe some light glass and epoxy along the seam to re-enforce. The one I built years ago did not crack at the seam, but did eventually crack at the mounting holes. It a good flying airplane, just try and keep the weight under 50 ounces if you can. Even at that weight or a little more, with the LA.46 you should be in good shape.
   Good luck and have fun,
