NEW - Evolution 60NX
« on: November 04, 2010, 01:45:01 PM »
Coming in January .....

http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=EVOE0605

I've had good luck with 3 Evo36's ... hope this is as well.

Looks like a great job with the needle valve too....

It looks like we are finally going to get our $150.00 sixty. The reviews on the 36 EVO was mixed at best. Let's see, if this is going to be any better.

Or you can always buy a proven engine for $110.00 or the ringed version for $104.00

Regretably they are so proven that they aren't being used simply because of better engines  more up to the task.
I have them both and have run them and eventually I'll find a use for them. But in spite of the comments on the evolution 36 all of the ones that I've used have performed flawlessly.I'll buy the 60 and judge for myself how good it is. I like to prove to myself what a product can or cannot do.

I can't wait to see it. It's so cool to have an arc that's good enough to kit bash. I've watched several (Joe Gilbert, Bob Branch) fly and they look very nice especially I like how they "sit" on the bottoms. I'm all fired up to get mine done....The wing has the Republic shape so any of the P35 through the xp72 are easily possible. I would like to do the xp44 with the cool NACA cowl and spinner.... I also am looking forward to other's being able to sample the big Evo...... Great time to be a stunt grunt...

I wouldn't really call the kit quality of the ARC "good" (that's been beaten to death elsewhere), but is is very "bashable". y1

Agreed, I was talking about the design.... The wood in my wing is VERY soft. One of the ribs has a knot in it.... Seriously.... Dennis had a good idea for stiffening the center section. I'm removing the planking and replacing it with single pieces that span the joint after I join the wing. I think the arc kit would be improved by that simple change. Supply the wood but leave the planking to the builder...... :!

I would be very interested in knowing how the Evo .60 compares in power and "stunt run" with the LA .65 I am currently using in my Score.  It wins the weight war hands down the Evo has a total Weight: 13.4 - 15.9 oz, depending if you use a tongue or tube muffler.  The LA weights in a full  4oz. heavier(16.6 oz.) with a Mac tube muffler.  But I have had very good power and stunt runs with this motor.  It has proven to be very realiable.  Looking forward to hearing more about the Evo .60 engine after somebody puts it in the air.  A really good inexpensive 60-65 stunt engine is long over do for us non-experts.

The only thing that I'd like to know is if this engine is the 60 built on the 46 case.If so it would be a small package and has a lot of possibilities.

Same case as 40, 46, and 52. Bolt pattern same as OS 46SF. Distance from front mounting hole to prop washer is slightly longer than OS. The plane I'm flying it in has flown with 46 SF. I'm using the same radial mount (fiberglass fuse) that held the SF. The SF had a 3/8" extension. The Evo has no extension but Big made me a 0.200" spacer plate to move the mount forward. Sooooo the front washer to front mounting hole difference between the SF and the Evo is about 0.175 with the Evo being longer.

Secret test site!! You rolling straight up "Area 51" on us. You forgot the fuzzy round circle over the face of the flyer. Were all over the license plate number of the blue car driving in the parking lot. I hate to tell you this, but back at Langley, there were a bunch of guys in dark blue suits watching your flight on a VERY BIG screen.

Still need to work out that inside/outside difference - it's breaking between a 2 and 4 in the insides, but hard 2 in the outsides.

Agreed. I haven't had a lot of time to fine tune the installation. It's on the list. I was trying to make sure it held the setting (5.4 laps beginning to end in video)  and made the power to swing useful props.. The engine in the video is truly "out of the box" I didn't even take the backplate off. I ran 6 oz of fuel through it on the bench and bolted it in. Most people will do it that way so I wanted to duplicate that experience.

What props were you using at the "secret site". Motor sounds good by the way. Noticed you were using a fairly loud "FlowThru" brand muffler.

The prop in the video is a 13.25x4.25 Bob McDonald undercambered carbon fiber. I had been using a 12x6 Zinger carved down to a reasonable thickness. I like the CF prop a lot..... Can't reveal the source of the CF in the prop though................

I updated the video with a location..... It's in the field next to the road where the balloon appears. The map won't let me put the balloon in the field..... Hmmmmmm maybe you're right about the "Langley" thing....

I wonder if that needle valve assembly will fit into the 36 so we can get rid of the remote needle valve?

I flew with Pete when he lived in Spanaway. He was a pretty good stunt flier and his Competitor design was pretty slick.

The highlight of my summer before last was Pete flying my Crosswinds II after competition was over at the FCM!  He flew like he'd never laid the handle down for a few years!  His pattern sure looked better than the one I did with that ship - that's why I decided it was worth the refinishing!!

Will and Randy,

Thanks for the kind words.  I was speaking with Allen Brickhaus the other day and shared with him that even to this day, with all the distractions I have involving the model airplane hobby that the first columns that I read in either Model Aviation or FLying Models are the stunt columns.  My heart has really never left my roots, no matter where my feet have taken me.

BTW - I'm finally going to finish a new SIG Super Chipmunk (my loving brother Dave, it a fit of fury, broke my only other one before I had a chance to fly it way back in my teenage years) our new **** engine, and I have a TP wing here that Bob Hunt built for me about 9 years ago now that has been getting lighter every year.  I plan toi try and get that attached to a fuselage of some sort for the upcoming season.

I hope you guys like the EVO 60NX CL ... Dave A put a ton of work into this for me as test dog and engineer - I just had to figure out how to get it done and in your hands.  I'm pretty proud of the efforts.

God Bless,

Pete

Guys - I just got notification from our factory that the EVO 60NX CL's are on the way.  About 30 days and counting adn we'll be shipping them out.

BTW - I am working on a retrofit NVA similar to the one on the 60NX CL for the original 36CL.  It will be early spring before I have the NVA's and venturi's available.

Have a great day!
