Satisfaction upon completion
« on: September 24, 2008, 07:43:36 PM »
I really like building. Mostly kits and short kits. Once completed it sure is nice to be able to share with others and this is another neat thing about this site. Of course I know I open myself up to "constructive" criticism and I know I am not a top notch builder, but I have fun doing what I can. Anyway, I just finished another one of Tom Niebuhr's kits from Blue Sky's Models, his profile Roadrunner. Polyspan and all Brodak dope (my wife helped with the colors). Power is Tom Dixon tuned OS.46 and all Morris controls. First flight will be this week. More to follow.

VEEERRY nice Jim!  What's it weigh?  Looks like it ought to be a winner for ya - don't forget the flight report!

Really really nice Jim. Nice thing about profiles is they are so easy to adjust stuff.

Dennis:
Including 1 1/2 oz tip weight, came in at 43oz, but that also includes a very pretty, but heavy Tru-Turn spinner. Think the spinner itself weights 1 1/2 oz. So, I may be able to drop some weight here with a lighter spinner.

Jim,
That is very nice looking. I like the eye. You need to come up and fly with us next time you are in Paris so I can see it up close.

OK, first flight updates. Got 8 flights in and I guess a success, no crashes! Wind was up a bit 10-15mph, but laid down to 5-8mph later. So, pretty good flight conditions. Tried several props and settled on 11.5X4 APC. I exchanged the 2 1/2" tires(shown in photo), for 2", to reduce weight. I fly on grass and the 11.5 prop did a little trimming of the grass. Not a big problem. The 11x4 and 11x5 were OK and no grass cutting, but I like the 11.5x4. Tried several .018" line lengths 62' then 60' and finally settled on 58'. Moved the lead-outs 1/4" forward. Good line tension. Measured tip weight at 1 1/4 oz. I fly alone so I think the wings were pretty level both level and inverted. I took off the spinner (in photo) to reduce weight, but may need a little nose weight after all-on TO smooth roll, but then kind of rockets up, but is easy to stabilize. I think this indicates a slight tail heavy. Landings, however are uneventful and smooth glide down. Think I am going to like the profile Roadrunner!
Thanks for all the nice comments.

Your wife has good taste in colors.  I like the eye, too.

My new plane also tends to hop off the ground.  My CG is pretty normal.  The local expert told me that shortening the tailwheel strut might help.  I shortened it, but I haven't had much opportunity to take off from pavement since then.
