I’ve been out to this field 4-5 times and there is never anybody here. Other than a homeless woman who looks like she’s taken up residence here. Do people still fly here? If so is there a club or club members that flys here on a regular basis.  Like to do some flying here if possible.

Many of us are retired, and will fly during the week as well as on weekends. As mentioned, the stunt guys fly frequently in the morning, and are done before noon. It is a public City of Dallas park, so you are welcome to fly there any time, as long as it's CL.

Yes the park seems abandoned at time when weather is nice.  I can remember while attending telephone schools of going to the park to fly when weather permitted after classes and on weekends.   I met Tom Farmer there one weekend.  He was one of the first people I flew combat against when he was in the KC area.  Didn't have fences then and you had to drive through the ditch to get to the road for the circles.  Destroyed a profile carrier there when control system got hung up there.  Many memories of the site.

Those were the best of times at the park.  I lived about 1/2 mile from it while going to college and used to fly early morning and or late evening with Bob Gieseke there.  I could hear him flying from my house.  I remember the dirt road and parking with no fences and the field behind the CL circles was huge, once was a small airport.  Now it is a Sam's and the rest is taken up with soccer fields.

How late of a bird are you?  I fly with them regularly on weekdays BUT I can't get there as early as "the dawn patrol" bunch.

There is a sign there that says the DMAA is the model
plane club affiliated with the field. It is welk used several
mornings per week. We usually try to beat the heat and
wind by flying in the mornings. Also, flying in the evenings
can be quite challenging due to the birds. They will fly
right thru the circles.

I went to a couple Southwesterns there about 1969.  It was a humdinger of a contest.  One year Stubblefield brothers took first, second, and third in combat.  The most memorable combat match was James Mears vs. Bob Gieseke.  Bob was smoking his pipe.  His opening move was a reverse wingover.  Subsequent maneuvers were predictable.  James was ready for him when Bob got to the outsides, and James got the kill.

We stopped by a function at SMU Saturday evening.  All the women there were pretty.

We stopped by a function at SMU Saturday evening.  All the women there were pretty. 

The 1964 Southwesterns was my first AAA contest.  It was huge.  Hobby park was a huge open field adjoining a small airport back then.  635 was still 5 years in the future.  I got to fly all sorts of things we don't get to fly at our meets now.  Combat, Rat, Stunt, HLG 1/2A and A gas A-1 and A-2.  We were busy!  Flew it again in 1965 then Uncle Sam had me doing various useless things until 1974.  By then 635 bordered the field and the city was chopping up the rest for soccer fields. FF was gone and it has shrunk each year since.  At least with soccer we got port-a-potties. I miss those big truly Regional meets and the women at SMU are still pretty!

In the summers the temps on the circles can reach 130 plus.  You can get overheated in about 30 minutes out there. Be careful alone. Evenings used to be the best of times. As the sun would set the air would go perfect for about 20 minutes. Those flights were amazing. Just like the grass circles in Muncie at dusk. But now the scissor tail bird population has gotten pretty big and they really dont like model planes. We had a huge bank of trees that were cut down about 10 years ago. Since then they have gone insane!

Check your weather app if it shows less than 10 mph from the east in the mornings there will usually be someone there. One the weekends now that it's not as hot people are there until 11 then the racing and speed guys show up and they are there for a long while too. If the winds are higher than 10 out of the east usually people dont come out unless they are practicing for a big contest. The turbulence is very harsh at times and makes flying a waste of time.
