Samuel's Stuntbot Build FINISHED!!!!!
« on: January 01, 2018, 01:57:50 PM »
In preparation for this years flying season and the Nats. Samuel will be building 2 "Stuntbot" airplanes designed and donated by my friend Larry Davis. Because the BOM rule at the Nats. I wanted a simple, easy to build airplane that Sam could do almost all the work himself. Larry really came through. The "Stuntbot" is a profile, foam wing, elevator only airplane. Wingspan of 48", 552 square inch wing, weight 40 to 44ozs, engine .36 to .46. Larry has done electric versions as well. There are no plans at this time to "kit" these airplanes, so we were lucky to get them.  As stated he will be building 2 at the same time, a back up just in case. Sam has been working hard the last few days and made quite a bit of progress. I'll use this thread to post photos. See you on the circles this summer.

Looks like a fun project for Samuel. Happy to see that, but I'd also love to see safety glasses in the shop, plus Nitrile gloves when using epoxy. Eyesight is a precious thing, as is NOT being allergic to epoxy. Sorry to bring the gloom...   y1 Steve

Not epoxy, Elmers white glue. Check on the safety glasses. I forgot.

Some color going on the wings. Since they are foam Sam is just using water based tempera paint. Covering will be clear Fascal. This has worked well for us on many Combat models.

You know, that's a great idea. More guys that fly that type of airplane should do all they can to put as much color into them as they can for visibility reasons. They don'e have any profile, next to nothing to help make the model stand out against a back ground. No real weight added, so make it so you can see it!

It is Doc. That's my daughter Emma. I've offered many times to build her a plane but she is just not interested. So for now it's just Sam and I.

It's not epoxy. It's Elmers white glue. I just wash it out when I'm finished with it.

We’ve been delayed on these but made some progress this weekend. Elevator hinged, CF gear drilled and axles installed, lead-out guide epoxied in.

How are the spar slots cut/ shaped?
What are the spars they must be spruce or something the cross section is real small
Do the slots and spars go all the way to the tip?

The spars are actually fiberglass 1/8" kite rods. There are 2 in the front(top and bottom) where a spar would normally go, that go all the way to the tip. The 2 in the back(top and bottom) go only halfway to the tip. Then each trailing edge gets one as well for stiffness.  My friend cut these cores and designed this model. You glue the spars into one wing half with white glue, after drying you glue that wing panel with the spars to the fuse which was already pre-drilled for the spars. Next glue the other wing panel to the spars and the fuse. I think you can see the progression in the pics if I posted them in order. The cores were cut on a friends CNC foam cutter, he's been playing around with using these fiberglass rods on speed limit combat planes and decided to do it on a stunter as well. Samuel had no trouble assembling this wing as everything lines up easily and uses white glue.

There is a slit in the surface of the wing where the hot wire went in, but the holes for the fiberglass spars are internal. After painting and covering you can hardly see it.

thanks I got it now.

Neat way to do that.  It also explains the small cross section of the spars.

However I don't think I can cut 1/8 round holes with a template and a bow.

It is so cool that Samuel and Mike can share this hobby!
I envy the two of them.

Mike, you and I talked almost two years ago (Mississippi-Black Hawk Mosquito.). I did get my two boys to build a model each...after I built their crash-n-go trainers. Mine have no interest in building, and barely humor me when we (I) want to fly. They don't like going round and round chasing angry bees...Babe Bees!

Even my buddy went through a few to get it right on a CNC cutter. It would be a challenge with a bow for sure.

It’s been a long time since I cut any foam, and even then it was very basic, but...

Would you have to actually cut the 1/8” hole, or could you just cut the wire in to the foam to the right depth, then turn up the heat a little to create the 1/8” hole, let it cool and remove the wire?

I foresee accuracy and consistency problems, but with a little experimentation it might work.

On the other hand, a nice external spar slot is easy to make on a router table, although very messy.
I have seen the light, and it’s powered by a lipo.

A small drawing with measurements shown for the balsa parts and a set of cores would he go for that?   Also Sam amy have to get little sister to try flying one of his old planes that is not too sensitive on controls.   My son did that with his sisters, all 3 of them while I was off to school one year. Mike as said elsewhere on this and other forums... I truly enjoy watching Sam grow up and progress

YOU are doing a great job with that young man

I did same with my son but we are not a photo centric family...

In fact with my son... I coached Model building, shooting, reloading, Ham radio, and auto repair /hot rodding

Shooting and Hot rodding stuck...but he has solid model building skills so when I pass all this STUF will not go to waste...grin

You can tell how serious and focused he is by that tongue hanging out there.

What Sam is learning is going to make him very capable in life.  He will not be the person at the mercy of the repairman, because very few mechanical things and very few structural things will be a mystery to him.  Unfortunately, once his future wife figures that out, he'll probably always have a long "honey-do" list.

He is also learning how to solve problems himself, how to be self-motivated, and undoubtedly stretching his attention span compared to his peers.  If more parents appreciated the benefits of model building, there'd be a whole lot more insisting that their children visit the geezer down the street and learn how to build a CL model!

Way to go Mike!

The greatest lessons my dad taught me was to try to understand how a thing works and why....building models, electronics (heath kit stuff) lawn mowers with 4 stroke engines, TV tubes, door locks, window ballasts, car clutches and throw out bearings (mom was hard on a clutch) engine ignitions and carburetors.... I never knew of any hired in craftsmen to repair a thing while I was a kid...dad and I pretty much did ALL the necessary repairs on the many (army family) houses we lived in

All those accumulated experiences made me very success full and competent in my adult life and it all started in 1959 at age 4 helping him build a model airplane

One of my brothers was not in the least interested and collected stamps... went on to be a doctor but could never diagnose or repair a single mechanical thing......a good thing from one perspective...he paid dearly for true craftsmen fixing his cars, mowers, and house hold items---to put their kids through college...grin

I was also 4 in 1952 when my father helped me build my first balsa airplane.  He made me do everything and it ended up looking like a 4 year old did everything but like you I fix or build everything still - drives my wife crazy.  One difference, he also collected stamps and as I have found out  - Old stamps are worth a whole lot more than old lawn mowers!
