Title: Samuel's New Birds
Post by: mike londke on September 01, 2016, 08:06:12 PM
Sam has beat up just about all his planes to the point they reall don't fly well anymore. In addition he's running the same Foxes I had when I was a teenager. They are pretty clapped out so its time to get this boy some better gear.  I built 2 of Phil Cartier's Rugged Stunt Trainers in two days. They are ready for final color dope and engines. They will both get new engines. One an FP .25 the other a K&B Sportster .28. My friend's flies really well on the .28 and I expect the .25 to be more than adequate.

   Hi Mike;
    Great to see you and Sam at Paducah. Sam looked like he really liked that Skyray .35 that he was pushing around like a wheel barrow! My son Sean used to do the same thing. When Sam gets to a point where he wants to glue a few pieces together to build an airplane. check out that thread on the Lew Woolard Spider here on the list somewhere. It's an old slow combat model that had a neat airfoil, and is designed to be built from 4 sheets of standard size balsa! The plans show how to lay out the parts on the sheet. Very nicely engineered, and with a few touch ups and personal preferences, a pretty nice looking airplane also. I ran off some plans and thinking about whipping one up just for a fun fly airplane. As designed, a .25 should allow room for a tank to do the pattern and if not,just stretch the nose a bit then the tail to match. I was just really impressed with the whole design concept, and being a combat flyer yourself, I think you'll see what I mean! Phil Cartier's stuff is pretty nice and may get one of those for the shelf myself also.
   Type at you later,
    Dan McEntee

 Thanks Dan I'll check out the Spider. Phil's RST is a steal at $59.

Phil's planes should be a good match for the young man.  Also the wings are replaceable.  I have been flying the big Streak of his,

I know Mike knows this but if you build the RST with typical Combat wing conventions it is nearly indestructible

Phil's recommendations are good...SLC pieces...but tedious to do   (for me)... So I used .75 FG cloth (nose and forward area of wing tips, and the heavier CF veil...aft center TE area out 4 " either side of Fuse ,and Kevlar cording from wing tip to Fuse along TE

As soon as Phil responds to my current order I plan to get another RST... danged good flying plane for not much $$....and as Mike posted , easy and fast to build if you don't get anal about the finish

            Mike, if your in need of another K&B .28 I have one. I believe it's in very good condition. The engine has the r/c carb on it currently. If you need it, it's yours. Ken
