Here's the few pictures I took. First pic should be Dave Fitzgerald's WC winning Thunder Gazer...I got to watch it fly on the winning flight, and it was very good, tho the bottom of the 2nd loop of the Clover got a gasp from all of us! No paint was damaged, but it was deemed illegal procedure by the NTSA. Good flying, Dave!
The "All American Eagle 2009" is Paul Walker's new weapon. I'd thought it was a one-piece plane, but the picture reveals the pockets for the screws for a 2-piece wing (Tom Morris style). I watched it fly, and it looked great, but I was downwind, during a break in the Advanced flying. I thought it was a .21FP at first...
The nose of Pat Johnston's Mustang, as published in MA. Pat says this is a great flying plane, so if you have a Stalker .51RE and want a smallish model (620sq"?), look it up. He won't let me fly it, tho...I'm bummed.
One of the prettiest and better flying combinations was Norm Whittle's "Sultan" with a Stalker .76RE with a header muffler. It's quiet, and sounds very good and powerful...I want one! I met Norm for the first time, and he's a good guy and very good flier. I'd heard he was a super builder, and finally realized that this Sultan is covered with FILM!
NICE! There might be some paint on the fuselage, but I didn't get to ask. I did get to launch it, and it pulls very hard. When it's just a bit too rich, it has a harsh vibration, but smoothes out fine at launch rpm.
I didn't find out who won Beginner, but maybe Russell Shaffer will post it? I was surprised to win Intermediate myself, after getting 4th in Sportsman Profile. Derek Moran won Sportsman Profile. Expert Profile was (I think) won by Pat Johnston, flying a P-40 ARF with dihedral added, .46LA. EDIT: Pat was 2nd. Norm Whittle won Expert Profile, flying Gordan Delaney's "Twin Pathfinder". Norm crashed his own Twin Pathfinder at home in Utah, when the inboard engine quit in the climb of a wingover, and Gordan made him bring a substitute. It flies really well!
Jeff Rein won all three combat events, which were NW 80-MPH, high performance 1/2A, and D-Bat.
Leo Mehl and I judged Advanced on Sunday, and then I went and mostly just watched the Experts. I left the field at 5pm and arrived home at 10:15pm. Not a bad drive at all, considering the holiday weekend. I stopped for a sit-down dinner at a real restaurant, and again for gasoline.
The weather was sunny but much of the time, there was some wind from the North that was more than we wanted. It was flyable, but I did have 2nd thoughts about a tuned pipe to control the windup. Generally ok!
