When my computer was fried by lightening a year or so ago I lost my list of what was published when.
Cand anyone tell me when Bob Mcdonald's Sagitta was published. Is it legal for super 70's? I have the plans but there is no indication on them of the publishing date.

Thanks Dick. I guess it's plan B, Werwage's Juno.

I've always thought the Sagitta is a georgeous airplane, and I know from experience of flying one that belonged to someone else sometime in the late 80's that it flys very well... I always intended to build one which I will, but it'll have to wait a little while longer. It's still in the "Bucket List".
So many airplanes...so little time!!!

It's certainly not a hardship to have to do the Juno instead.

Hi Randy...
My 71 year old memory won't tell me what the Aquilla looked like. Do you have or can you direct me to a photo and is it in fact super 70's legal?

I have actually flown a Sagitta and was very impressed with it. In fact I wondered at the time why it wasn't more popular. Of course it isn't really easy to build with the I beam wing and about a thousand (yes it's an exageration but it seems like that from looking at the plans) ribs.

I really think the original Sagitta was a bit underpowered (HP40) but mine would not be...love those RO Jett 61s and PA61s and I have several.
I also have several very good (randy Smith) ST46's.

Anyway you have my intrest up for the Aquilla. I do remember it...at least I remember the name but just can't dig it out of the grey matter!

Does anybody have a picture of the Sagitta that could be posted here? That name does ring a bell, but I can't remember the model, and I really feel like I liked it a lot...

Aquila, FM Apr 80

Sagitta, FM Nov 83

(I think the flaps on both of these models could be operated with a single horn without the need for even a lucky box. I would strongly recommend that if the airplanes be built to not split the flap horn as shown on the Sagitta plans. At least use a lucky box. One might be appropriate for the Aquila.

Both are good flying airplanes and reflect the talents of Bob McDonald as a designer with a flair for aesthetics.

(Randy, I will bring a copy of the Aquila article to the field in the morning.)

Hi Randy

The :Aquila, FM Apr 80 , and Sagitta, FM Nov 83... will NEVER be Supr70s legal, if there ever becomes a event for 70s, However Both are legal for Nostalgia 30
You can wait anther 30 years and they still will never be s70s legal
I think the Aquila is the better plane!

Remember once you have the rib cutting jig set right, you cut ribs all night. Then it is just a matter of cutting off enough to fit where it goes in the wing. Don't forget extras for the landing gear area and next to the fuselage. I-Beams are not that hard. Have to build the main part of the fuselage first.

As Ed said, we are having an event for Super 70's at VSC next year in 2014. Jim Hoffman announced that earlier in a post here on Stunt Hanger. I think if the Aquila was flown prior to Dec 31, 1979 it will qualify. I'll have to investigate that a little further.

I suspect you'd like the Aquilla. I built one about 1985 or so. I did build it with the split horns and that was the reason for it's demise. Listen to Keith and do a lucky box. Much better solution. But for the 50 or so flights I had on it (with OS 45FSR), it was a great flying plane.

If Bob did have the plane before Jan 1 1980 then of course your correct, He had something in the late 70s that flew very well, I will look thru my Pics of the Middle Earth Championships for a name

Aquila, FM Apr 80 , was looking at my old photos, and talked to BOB.

It Was built/flown in 1979 , so that one is the 1970s plane, the other one is from the 80s according to BOB
So build the Aquila :-)
