For those of us who spent many hours with "The Cat", this is a real tear jerker.  :'(

Being an old Fart I was already out of the Navy when the f-14 was king but that still ran a chill down my back. Guess the flight deck gets in your blood, once an airdale always an airdale.. As a side note we still had a squadron of AD's in our CAW, really telling my age...

It's still depressing to think of the Tomcat as "history". :'( I'm not a big jet fan, but the F-14 is one BAD A-- airplane!!! f~

Guys,

I wasn't in the Navy or even in the military, but I wouldn't be able to do what I/we do without the Navy and many others.

I salute all you military folks,  the F-14 and all the other planes and equipment that have gone before.

P.S.  I was able to spend three days (at sea) on the USS Enterprize about 4 years ago.  It was unforgettable!!

I was always a huge fan of the F-14....but it infuriated me that, when the Navy was asked (Reagan?) to cut its budget, the Admirals all said to get rid of the F 14....all of them! They cited high upkeep, weight and the fairly much single role function.
Politics entered in the form of Al DeMatto, who lobbied long and hard to not only KEEP the thing, but to spend even more $$$$ on revising it...huge expense.
There is a Tomcat II on the deck of the Intrepid, and one at the Cradle of Aviation Museum on L.I......faster yet, with lighter kerosene plants, and some ground attack capabilities...
The point is that the Tomcat should have flown last in the early 90s, except for Al....he did that just before his conviction....
I watched them work out at the end of Long Island a bunch of times....very hot rod....
