Rule One! Never rush. Especially when painting
« on: March 06, 2007, 06:42:50 PM »
OK, so this is the first day in many days that I could shoot some paint. The weatherliars say that rain will close in tonight and that we are looking at rain and temps in the 40 for the next 2 weeks. But today, it's 65 degrees and mostly clear with no wind. So I think, here's my opportunity to shoot clear on the the new classic plane.

I swear, Murphy had a field day today. I tried to take off from work early so I could shoot the paint, but events conspired to put every roadblock possible in the way. Man, I should have just blown it off till later. But NO. I had to shoot it today. So I get home and finally get set up, but I just went too fast and probably mixed the clear just a little thin. I cleaned the plane first, but in my haste, didn't allow it to be completely dry. I tried dry wiping it and it LOOKED dry. So, lots of work ahead as I sand down about a million runs and fisheyes and reshoot on a thin coat. Sigh....

This is only about the 50th plane I've built. You'd think I'd learn.

So please. Don't Rush. It just can't come out well. HB~>

I am afraid we are all guilty of doing things like that. One of my worst habits when I am making something with very small parts is to spend 15 minutes making a part, drop it on the floor and spend an hour looking for it and then spend 15 minutes making another one. To add injury to insult after I get the new part installed I will see the original one laying on the work bench, I only thought it hit the floor.

If you have any serious runs you may be able to speed things up a little by using a new razor blade with one layer of masking tap wrapped around each end. Leave a section exposed that is as wide as the run. Hold the blade perpendicular to the surface and scrape the run off. Don't try to cut it unless your luck has got much better. The masking tape will prevent you from going to deep and scratching the adjoining paint.

I think it was just that we had one of those days at work. I run a crisis program and, big shock, today was crisis day. Man, one long headache, then the hold-ups getting home and such. The worst part was, I should have known better, I was in no frame of mind to be messing with the thing.

Oh well, it will all come out. Luckily, I have lots of experience removing runs. Most are over wood and not open bays, so that helps. and I know the razoer blade trick. you can also use 1/64 ply on each side and a hardwood sanding block, though it takes some touch. It will take a couple of days and no doubt I'll need to hit it again with a very light coat of clear, but it will be OK. Man, it sure is pretty with the clear coat on, too. Sigh...

Randy,,
oh booy howdy do I know how you feel..
having been there and done that,, I wont say how many times. My Q started off rather poorly. When I shot the sealer coat, I overthinned it intentionally, but not having sprayed this product, well it was a wreck, fortunatly, a clean gun with thinner, and lots of rags, I washed the sealer coat off and tried again, second shot was much better. Its all the way up to almost ready for clear,,,, Posted some picts in the ARF ARF section of tonights work, Its lookin kinda cool,, Bet it wont get stepped on in the pits!!! I wish you all the best with the clear, lots of patience as you well know, otherwise it only goes from bad to worse,,,,
One bright spot, hey you got lots of time to sand patiently,, its gonna rain and be cold for two weeks remember?

NO NO please dont throw bricks at me,, I can joke I been there remember
For years the rat race had me going around in circles, Now I do it for fun!
