Title: RSM Grey Ghost Kit
Post by: Leester on December 30, 2010, 05:31:32 PM
I just received my Grey Ghost kit by RSM from Wayne at Northcoast Hobby and was supprised by the wing construction. It is basically built like an "I" Beamer, fuselage upside down with Rib # 16 being the wing rib supports. The leading edge of the wing stops at the fuselage sides. This should be an interesting build. Anybody else have the kit and built it ??? Your comments would be appreciated. Here's some shots of the plans hope you can see what I mean.

Hi Lee!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Never built the model, nor seen the kit, sorry.  But, I like the self jigging set up!

And the "missing LE" is not that uncommon.  I have never seen any problems from it if done correctly,  and the plans look like it is done correctly! ;D

I was looking at a scan of that model today, and didn't know Eric was selling a kit! LOL!!

I resurrected a topic on the Grey Ghost about a month ago:

At least SSHobbies is listing the kit too.

Many modern R/C planes have the wings attached to the fuselage by a tube in the spar area, so I guess it is feasible in a one-piece ship too. I just wonder what the advantage is in leaving the leading adge out at the fuselage.

Upon further examination of the plans, in that U area where the leading edge would be the landing gear are shown sewn in with copper thread. At least that's what it looks like to me, although they show clips on the plans ?? any idea on how they would work ???

What do those landing gear brackets attach to? Fuselage sides and F13?

In the top view, I think the wire is just marked differently to separate it from the wooden parts. Is that what you mean by "landing gear are shown sewn in with copper thread"?

Yep, sewing in with copper thread is a common practice and that's what I thought it showed but could be wrong. As far as connecting the clips ???

Sometimes to accommodate a larger fuel tank.

Or a larger Lipo!  RSM is rumored to be bringing out more ECL turn key power systems.  In either case its nice that RSM pre-engineered the feature.

The spar system looks like a simplification & improvement over that shown in the original magazine aritcle too!

No LE between the fuselage sides equal longer fuel tank with shorter nose..

Or just a plain old longer tank for the same nose length....

If you study Larry's plans of past ships you will see the spar is the strength of the planes wing.  The designer of the Stuntwing did the same thing.   I have had several planes in which the leading edge has been cut t match the fuse.   The King Sweep is one I am working on now that is that way also.  The strength is in the center spars.   H^^

It was me that contacted Eric and suggested that he do this kit. It took a few years and a few emails between Eric and Larry but the end result was worth the wait. I have 2 of the kits here and haven't done a thing with them. I am in a horrible building slump and can't seem to get out of it. The only thing I can build here lately is a fire to sit by at night. At least it is doing something with wood........

Hey Bill, any comments on the way the landing gear is secured ?? Not real sure on this.

Hey Bill M., if you are in a building slump come on out to Eastern Kansas.  It will put you in a building phase.  Sub freezing temps or high winds put in a buillding frenzy just to keep me in side. #^ H^^

Hi Lee,

Sorry, but I can't really tell much from the plans and all.  I'd have to see the parts to tell much.

Those clips look like the ones we used to make to hold the LG in place on a profile.  But they were bolted on the fuselage, like the nylon clips in use these days.

And, I would maybe use my own way (which I would just figure out as I went along! LOL!!) for securing the gear.  Anything to hold it securely in place would be fine either sewn, clips, j-bolts.....  whatever looks the easiest to do.

Sorry that I can't help more.......

Bill

I emailed Eric and he replied that the landing gear goes in the clips shown on the plans and bolted to the inside of the fuselage to the ply doublers and balsa sides. Kind of different.

I might be mistaken but those clips shown on the print look like the same kind used in the Sterling Grumman Guardian clips years ago for holding the gear in place. If they are the right dimensions, I could use some. How about a picture and some dimensions. I might get some from Eric.

Makes sense to me, Lee. I could only think that the clips had to bolt to the sides, but I wasn't going to state that on only a "guess".  And it IS a different way of doing things!  Then, again, I have some very early C/L plans that show motor mounts being bolted "thought" the fuselage, and other similar "tricks".  Mostly all were conceived (I think) to deal with a lack of some different types of glues that came along later.

Good Luck!  I want to see one of those built. ;D

HI Wayne, you might be like I am these days and getting less motivated to make something if I can buy it.  But..... you know those are a cinch to make with some aviation snips, pliers and a drill or drill press. ;D  Brass shim stock or even an old thinner can for the material, and cheap, too! Wayne check and see if the Brodak BH-744 Control Horn retaining mounts would work. That's for 1/8" and the BH-745 is 3/32"

Hey, I "get" that! LOL!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the phone conversation last night, Denny!

Thanks guys, I figured it would be to good to be true. Those clips I mentioned were steel and in the day were used in electrical work to secure wire in applications other than homes. They were steel and secured 1/8 dia. wire. Today plastics been substituted. Sometimes the old steel ones show up at flee markets but not lately. Funny though, they were made by Tinnerman Products here in the Cleveland area but they are gone with the applications. Relative to using brodak horn clips, I would think that the application for the gear was to agressive as those horn clips are shim stock. Oh well maybe next time. Have a good new year in 2011. Good health and good flying.

Per our conversation, here's how we solved the same issue with the ISW, G.C. and the El D...
