Roush Mustang
« on: December 11, 2011, 04:22:59 PM »
Rebecca and I got a big thrill today. It was 10:45 this morning and were just getting into our Mustang in the parking lot behind Denny's restaurant  when Rebecca looks up and says look how fast that plane is on approach. The Concord airport runway is just a 1/2 mile east of where we were at Concord Mills Mall. Here comes Jack Roush in his P51 Mustang in a high speed pass at about 200 ft going 200+++++MPH. I saw him pull up and go around and he was back and we saw the gear drop and he came over us this time much slower. We drove over to his Nascar shop at the airport but didn't see the plane. I drove buy the airport terminal,it is very small and he comes out the front door in his red flight suite. As we drove buy he says "Great lookin Mustang" I didn't want to be a jerk so we drove on but next week I will go to his shops and see if I can get some pictures of the P51. I suspect he keeps it in one of the many huge hangers at the opposite end of the airport. There are many, many Nascar airplanes at this airport.

Just the other day, I was wondering if Jack still has his pilot's license, after his two crashes. Wondering how much of that the FAA puts up with???

I watched the video and found his comment about the 500 lb watermelon to be in poor taste, not very PC,......and right on the money!!!  y1 Steve

Cool story, but I'm a little confused by this part....

As we drove buy he says "Great lookin Mustang" I didn't want to be a jerk so we drove on........

You didn't respond to his compliment? How is that not being a jerk?

Sounds like you snubbed him. LL~

I don't know if he still owns the Mustang in the video. I thought he sold that one to finish up his current "Old Crow" that is a B/C model with a Malcolm Hood canopy. I heard him talk at the debut of the latest Mustang with Bud Anderson at Oshkosh, and I think he said that he has built up 3 or 54 different versions of the "Crow" for Bud to fly, and had sold the others as the next was completed. He lost an eye, I believe, in the crash of his biz jet at Oshkosh a couple of years back, and don't know how that would affect his medical certificate for his ratings. Nice airplane, though. He usually donates a special one of a kind Ford Mustang to auction off to support the EAA's Young Eagles program and they are pretty nice also!

The Mustang I saw had the black and white strips going up the side the one in the video does not. There are many Nascar shops within 10 miles of my house. I know several Roush,Hendrick and Woods Brothers employees as they eat lunch in Harrisburg and it is hard not to run into them. I have met Rick Hendrick many times but Jack Roush is seldom seen. I had never seen the P-51 at Concord Regional Airport before and do not know if it is kept here or if Jack was flying it. I wondered about his licence and if he was flying the plane and I avoided all those questions as I kept on driving . I would have had to hit the breaks and back up to ask to talk to him and he was just being friendly not looking for a reply. I was totally surprised to see him exit the front of the terminal building as I would expect him to have his car near the hangers. It was one of those things that hapens so quick you do not know how to react.

I change what I said about the stripes on the side. I looked at some more video and when looking up from the ground the stripes look like they go all the way up the sides but now I can see that they only go around the air intake and stop at wing height. Now I want to know which plane it is that I saw. They all seem to be painted the same except for the name on the nose.

He does have his license back. I think he got it a couple of months ago. I know there was a little get together up at the airport in hickory NC on Sat. A couple of guys with really expensive toys met for lunch up there. I know the guy that I take aerobatic lessons from was there with his decathalon, Jack was there with his mustang, Carl Edwards extra 300, someone's T 6 was there too I think. I couldn't go cause I had to work.  I believe Jack keeps his mustang in Concord.
