Never had this happen B4
« on: April 20, 2013, 07:34:28 PM »
I had a very productive day... Got over to Jim's house and got a refresher on Ink Lines 101 the got a coat of clear on the Force.  As I sat in the easy chair after I got home I noticed there was still lots of day light- light winds and no rain headed our way. I packed up my trusty stooge plane and headed in search of a empty field. My first choice had some dude and his gal practicing hitting softballs across my circle. (they had my field once before) Right next to that field are two very nicely groomed soccer fields. Not a soccer mom or kid in sight! It was around 6pm so everyone was out on a Saturday night. ;D
Broke out the stooge and put in 4 flights. It is all coming back to me. I hit some very nice bottoms. (Why can't I do that on contest day???)
Any way to make a short story longer, as I was into flight #3 and doing the square eights one of those big mosquito looking bugs ( or something like it) flew right into my left ear. Talk about timing. It did not cause me problems but had I been on a down leg it might have. Was not a very good square eight either.

Never had that happen B4.

But what a long day... getting a plane almost done and putting it a few flights as the sun set. SWEET! x:

If you were a seasoned Minnesota flyer, you probably wouldn't even have noticed. Part of the summertime "conditioning" up here. ;D

I'm no entomologist, but aren't those called Mayflies by some people? Look like mosquitoes but much larger? For years, on our way back home from the SIG contest, we would run into swarms of those along MO Highay 61 north of Hannibal, MO. They would just smash the windshield and cover it up. I didn't dare turn on the wipers, because it would have taken 50 gallons of washer fluid to wash it off! We had to stop in Hannibal each year at a particular gas station so I could wash the windows for the rest of the trip home, and there was a Dairy Queen on the same lot! About ten years ago or so, we didn't run into them and haven't since. Won't for SURE this year >:( At the couple of NATS that I attended in Lawrenceville, IL I would run into them each evening heading back to the dorms in Vincense, Indiana with the same result. Messy little critters!

We call them "Candle flies" here. To my understanding, May flies are those itty-bitty pesky flys.

Perhaps they are called different things in different places. The expletives released when they pester you are universal.  ;D

Well lets just say one side was kind of square and the other side was "dang what the heck just flew in my ear turn the plane over quick!"

How would you score that? LL~

A Japanese beetle flew into the space between my sunglasses and my eye at the 97 NATs, during a square eight. I thought I sort of messed up the inside bottom but that flight was high on the circle for the day. Unfortunately no Japanese beetles flew into my eye on Top 20 day.

Not trying to top yer story, but I did have a fly, fly into my mouth during the four leaf. I do not remember if it had any flavor or not. But I spit and hacked for an hour. LL~ LL~ LL~ H^^

Frank McMillan has us all beat, he got stung by a bee and crashed at one of the Team Trials (2005, I think, since I didn't witness it).
