For a plane of that size I'd be ecstatic with 52 ounces. y1

So, 38 days to this point. What was the overall labor time versus sleep time ratio? ;D

Gold leaf is old-school in stunt, back to the 50's or 60's.

I see what you mean but I would go with the ruler rather than a cell phone camera and the usual circus mirror distortion.  Under normal circumstances with no obvious straight lines or references, it's not visible, but this is just about all lines and easy references.

I had to check the optical illusion it is parallel

Even with a bounding box its slightly off because of the angle I am holding the airplane. But its close ,real close.

Just looked strange and I am glad its onlt the phone cams issue. It might have something to do with the flaps being held slightly down and elevators slightly up and the amount of taper in them.

I figured it was just the picture, that's good. ;D

This is really weird now though, in your above "parallel" response #9 Sparky it still appears to be crooked on my computer screen. Hmm. Maybe it's just my computer for some reason, but what I see as I'm sitting here is that it is definitely crooked. Looking at the reply #9 photo the red stripes on the stab go deeper down into the shaded "parallel" reference bar on the right side that they do on the left side. The flap line looks parallel to the shaded bar. I'm not arguing that it's actually crooked at all here Sparky, but that's what my screen shows.  ???

Hi Sparky
I own the original Tom Warden Continental. It hangs on the wall in my workshop. You are invited to come and visit my home and check out the  Continental any time you might be in the area. I just thought you might like to know the actual color of the checkerboard on the bottom of Tom's original  Continental since what you stated in your video was incorrect. I provided the photos for RSM's kit to Eric Rule, and if you would like any additional photos of the real thing, I would be happy to provide them. You did a very good job of duplicating Tom's Continental. I respect your workmanship and the models you build.
You apparently doubt what I have offered  to you.  I can prove what I have told in many different ways.
I live in northern Colorado. If you would like to stop in and examine the original Continental, just let me know. I would be pleased to show it to you.
Regards,
Gary Sauder

Well its been 45 years sense I saw it so I don't remember for sure what it was. I am only going by what the magazine article said. But if you own it you would know better than anyone what it is now. What engine does it have in it? and how much does it weigh? I always loved that airplane.

Read caption under bottom picture

Thank You for your offer and kind words

You are correct, the magazine article does say the checkerboard is red. I am guessing that a different person added the photo caption, and made a mistake. I am sure the Continental was not repainted. It has a McCoy 40 engine. I think it may have been specially fitted. I have had the model since the mid 1970's, and did weight it back then. As I recall it was about 48 ounces. I did fly it a couple of times. It didn't really turn very well. Apparently due to the very long nose, as noted in the article. After that it hung in my hobby shop in Gardena California until we sold the shop in 1978 and moved to Colorado. The plane is in good condition for its age. The only damage is from the shrinking of the Aero Gloss dope. there are 3 places on the wing where the covering has split, the inboard flap is warped up, and there is a crack around the canopy. But it is still very beautiful.

I think the hard lined paint scheme worked very nicely on the SV-11.

If I recall that should be a McGas .40 by George Aldrage it use to 8 cycle over the top. Sounded if it was going to quit at times. The long nose and the Minado to follow is why it probably is still in great condition. Tom was probably not happy with the turn and didn't fly it much. That was the plane that got me interested in CL stunt. Bill Noyes had a Jet called the Pisces and they flew together. At one time I bought a Chipmunk by Bill for $40.00 painted with the same paint scheme as the Continental. Big money back then. I truly miss those days at Whittier Narrows.

That's a fantastic job you've done, Robert.  I built one of these a few years back from one of Bill Sawyer's kits. It too weighed 48 oz (with an Enya 45), and it too doesn't turn that great.  I moved the CG aft, which improved things in some ways, but left it not exiting hard corners as precisely as I'd like. I've often wondered whether the tail volume is too small.  A variable ratio elevator horn would probably have helped as well.  In any case, it's a great-looking design.

Looks great Sparky, another nice one added to the fleet. y1

I can't resist a comment here though, and this is simply my observation and opinion. I just don't understand doing ink lines on only the wing and then leaving the fuselage etc. of the airplane without. It just seems like it should be either all or none of the airplane when deciding to do ink work, otherwise it's like it's only half done. To me anyway, it stands out like crazy.

Hi Ty
Yes, this is the same Continental that was on display at VSC a few years ago. I recall talking with you on that occasion. As you know it is the one featured on the cover of Model Airplane News and was pictured with the construction article in that same issue. It is not a feather weight plane, but it is fairly large. That was a great time at VSC, unfortunately for me, I haven't been able to attend since.

One time I let you guys (never again) geode me into a pilot once against my thoughts. I'm not sure if someone would tell Leonardo da Vinci to paint his Mona Lisa with a different smile or Michelangelo to paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling with a different scene. That was their vision and this is mine.

This is how I wanted it just like they did in the 60-70.

There are a few people that just can't be satisfied.   Sparky if I had just a small percentage of your talent and patience I would be thrilled to death.   The plane looks absolutely gorgeous to me as all of your planes have.   Yes, I have been told i don't know how to finish a plane.   But, I don't care as long as it flies to my satisfaction.

That includes the pilot.   He/she looks great.
