So far this year
« on: August 04, 2014, 05:37:37 PM »
Well i haven't  met my goals for this year such as  learn the whole beginner stunt pattern. But i have gained something that is gonna help me in the long run. I have learned how to diagnose engine problems. I have had more time trying to get my engine to run right then i have been learning. But, i have written all the advice down that people have given me in diagnosing engine problems and all that i did to get the engine to run perfectly. I will say i am perfectly happy and feel that i haven't backed down on any goals. I've learned allot and that makes for a great flying season. i have something to carry on to next year and the years to come. Next year i will have the whole pattern down.

Learning the various reasons an engine can misbehave, and the solutions, is not trivial.

So, for that matter, is learning all the various reasons an electric system can misbehave, and their solutions.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

in my opinion, the engine run is the uphill part of the battle. there are so many problems with learning the pattern on bad engine runs. I'd say you're ahead of schedule, at this point.

Hey Anderw
Everyone chases the perfect engine run. Well anyone running IC engines. I'm still learning.
Just this weekend one of my flying buddy's had his engine go lean right after the horizontal 8's. Three flights and it went lean in about the same spot.

I have had the same problem with a clunk tank. The pickup line got a pin hole causing a air leak. His tank was metel. I suggested a different. He said he had swapped it out, twice.
My coached looked at his tongue muffler and said his holes were not big enough causing the engine to over heat.
Next step was to fly without the muffler. It ran fine. Drilled out the holes and problem resolved.
I learned something.

Glad your picking things up. Keep on keeping on.  H^^

Hey there,
This learning is way fun and I agree on engine runs.
The OS .40 on my Prowler was cutting out towards the end of the pattern and some club members suggested I try muffler pressure on the inflow. Worked like a charm.
So we are always taking in the intel.
Good luck to you on learning the pattern. The engine run will for sure make that happen.

Andrew,

If you want some help with the beginner pattern, I will be in Paducah on Friday by mid morning on the 15th.  I'll spend as much time with you as you would like.
