Richards Kits F 94 C Starfire (New Pics)Finished pics
« on: September 04, 2006, 07:50:15 AM »
I received my F 94C from Larry a week ago and started right away. Here is one case where the leading and trailing edges are preformed and notched for ribs that I would have great trouble trying to reproduce with just plain stock. Well anyway I did a few mods. the motor mounts per the old Sterling kit were only 2 1/2" long so I made them 5 1/2" for the B-25 thats going to power it. I found a adj. leadout guide that was about 2 3/4" long and fit perfectly between the spar and leading edge. I also added alum landing gear instead of the wire. W.S. is 40 Sq. in. ??? I had to do some adjusting to get a 3" bell crank in but got it done. This is a pretty fast build and should be done by this weekend (I hope)  Here's some construction pics.

Hi Lee,

You're making me want to get out that Golden State Models kit that I have (one of 4 kits I own) and put it together!  Good looking job.  What's the power going to be?

Man, you are going to love that plane!  y1

It has such a *nostalgic* look in the air, and the B-25 should be a great combination.  #^

I just got ahold of a Golden State Models repro F-94 from a private party. I have a question though. What is the purpose of the narrow slot cut in the fuse between the motor mount cutouts? I see yours has the same cutout.

The landing gear slides in then you but in bulsa. Your doublers should be grooved only where the landing gear are mounted. I didn't care for that so I used Alum. gear.

Yeah, that LG mounting system was generic to the old Sterling profiles of that series.  I'm pretty sure the F-94 was the last one of the series.

I have pondered putting a trike gear on mine, but I really don't think that wing could stand the extra weight when it comes to lift.  n1  Sure would look neat , though!!!  :!  n~

Got it guys, thanks.
Mine didn't come with any L/G, so the slot wasn't making any sense. I thought when I build mine I'd do the trike gear anyway. Some 1/8" wire and super light wheels shouldn't make too big a difference on this model, it's just for fun and sport anyway, plus it's gotta look right, F-94's had trike gear, so that's what the model gets. ;D If I get real ambitious, maybe I'll add an extra bay out on each wing for some more squares.

My copy of the Sterling plans calls for 1/2" rudder offset. Seems alot by todays standards, should I go with it or is less better?

Hi Lee,

All that offset isn't needed.

Just about finished. I've got to sand, prime and paint the fillets and put on decals and it's finished. It's going to weight about 30-31 oz. any ideas where to balance this??? as of now 1 1/2 oz of lead on the tail balances 1" behind the leading edge at the fusalage.

Hi Lee,

Give it a shot there, with paint and all the CG will shift rearward a touch.  You can always add more lead to the tail, or open up the handle spacing, or add more elevator throw,................................ or some of all three!  **)

Leester, that is a sweet looking machine. Gonna fly good too, I can tell just from looking at it.  ;)

And I see the humble beginings of a mess in the backround, I feel better now  **)

Looks good!
The U.S. insignia and the Navy are on the wrong wings though, the stars and bars always go on the left wing, and Navy on the right.  Doh!!! (sorry). ;D ;D ;D

Hi Lee,

I spent a lot of time yesterday and today working on my P-51B which I modified from Bob Hunt's Mustang.  Got the first coulpe coats of dope on the wings and covered all the tail pieces.  Did some things like fitting the pipe tunnel and such just got to mold some top and bottom blocks and such and all the parts will be made.  BTW: haven't made the molds yet!  **)

I think I will take a weekend this winter and build that F-94.  ;D

Yours does look really nice!  Good luck with it.  y1
