Title: Revlite ?
Post by: Allan Leonard on January 26, 2018, 01:49:04 PM
I don't know if this is the proper place to ask this, I went to >>Product Reviews<< but didn't seem like much activity was to be found.

I'm considering an engine purchase but know nothing about the NV AX-40 BB CL. Would anyone care to give an opinion on not only the engine but dealing with them and their customer service?

Thanks
Allan Leonard

I was totally mystified, so let "Cortana" find their website for me. The "Big Mig" 1/2a engines seem to have a following, so maybe some of those folks will pitch in with some opinions. I suspect they're pretty typical R/C engines, with high output at higher rpm than we'd like, even for sport-stunt. Here's the website: http://www.nvengines.com/ (http://www.nvengines.com/)    H^^ Steve

So here's my opinion, and it is along the lines of what Steve is saying. It's a hot rod of a 40. I didn't look to see if this one is the exact model you're looking at, but they're all similar. If you choke it down enough to operate in an acceptable RPM range, it may sag when cornered hard. I have this one, and I was thinking of mounting it in a speed pan for formula 40 or C speed. It wouldn't compete with the big dogs, but it's a little hot for CLPA.
Send me a message if you wanna work something out and try this one. I can stick a small venturi and appropriate NVA in it.

Oh, and as far as their 1/2a engines, website and customer support, it's all awesome! Great company to deal with.

Russia. The case is stamped on all of them, made in Russia. But I agree. It's got that type of design work. Look at the size of that intake and exhaust! It's made to flow some air in a hurry!

And yet, the NV website claims that per displacement, their engines are far more fuel efficient due to the cylinder technology they use.
This may be true in full 2 cycle mode, but I have always wondered how their slippery liners would fair in a 4-2-4 type run, if you put on a smaller venturi.
I doubt that they would be too much better on fuel, but you never know.
I know my OS.46LA becomes a miser when the needle is screwed in enough to give me 2-2-2 runs. 4-2-4, not so much!

They also have a gas version of the .40, that uses a glow plug vice ignition. Even though the website doesn't list a C/L model, in asking them they said they can put one together and it would be the same price. I ALMOST was tempted to try that, but chickened out. It's all too easy to just spend money on something that I know will work.

My .061 has a Lot of pinch at the top.  If the 40 is anything like that a 4-2-4 run will destroy that engine.  A tuned pipe might be the way to go.

Good point Phil.
Might have to use the BBTU and a low pitched prop.
