Title: REVISITED CRASH PHOTOS!!KEEP EM' COMING:) We've come a long way baby! MAYBE NOT

Keep them coming. Last week end I found an old slide that was taken by a fellow stunt grunt of mine.

Like Bill Netabandeeedo! Ed never bothered to take out his camera to take photos of stunters while they were in one piece.
Like Bill....AS SOON AS A CRASH HAPPENED...HE WOULD RUN TO HIS CAR...GRAB THE CAMERA AND START SNAPPIN' HIS FOOL HEAD OFF!

Here is one taken after my take-off with my beautifully refinished old Shark 45 hit a crowd control stand at a very tight roped off circle at the old Boeing Field Airport terminal.

I was flying with 70 ft. lines...but the circle had only about 12 feet extra...(if you were flying on 60 footers..I must have backed up a bit too far on take off....and BAM!!! MY OUTBOARD WING DISAPPEARED IN A FLASH OF PIECES....ALONG WITH THE OUTBOARD FLAP!

I kept on flying my level laps...gave the signal for a reverse wing over...continued the pattern....through out the rounds, inverted flight, but finally BAILED OUT...THE SQUARE STUFF SUCKED....and on the back corner of the triangle....I PANCAKED that old model onto the tarmac..bending back the nose gear...shearing off the prop (which included an engine burning SHAFT RUN.
At least Ed...took his old jacket, wrapped it into a ball and stopped that blue-smokin screamin K&B45 before...he carefully arranged the pieces left over for his usual CARNAGE-WRECKAGE SHOT!

AT LEAST...THE BUSTED SHARK was easy to throw back into my beautiful brand new 1967 VW BUG!! ~^

After his engine shut off during the last loop of the 4 leaf...he tried to WHIP-IT...WHIP IT GOOD! Sadly he WHIPPED IT BAD! REALLY BAAAAD!
On Tim's attempt to whip it up and over the top...the Sandttttaaaana
winds took over and took off the whole front end of his new stunter and broke the horz. stab off and crushed the aft end. (Check out the bare balsa below the horz. stab. GOD BLESS MONEY-COAT!'
He got up early...5 minuted' the front end back on.....installed the engine, took it out for a test flight.
Here he is shown...rebuilding the cowling and tweaking the tank...RIGHT OUT THERE IN THE HOT AFTERNOON LA SUNSHINE...
THANKS BE TO THE GLORY OF DEDICATION AND PRAYER...N' HOTSTUFF!
He was back on the practice circle in little over n' hour.
Althogh Tim or I...didn't place that year. Tim flew the best that pattern of his life that next morning. His pick of the draw was to fly right after Bart Klapinski and then followed by Bob Gieske!!! It doesn't get roughern' that!!!
Bart won the nats by a sizable margin...but his flying was HEAD N' SHOULDERS AND U KNOW WHAT ABOVE EVERY OTHER COMPETITOR THAT YEAR!

It was so hot that afternoon, I was flying my back to back practice flights without the cowling...just to keep that hot Merco from cooking the finish on my week old Sting Ray's new Aerogloss finish.

Tim Dunlop passed away...in 1971 waaay before his time. Being a Capt. of a Portland Fire Boat.... later I was told that not one fireboat member survived for many years after being exposed to extremely toxic fumes from a chemical plant fire on the river.

He was truly was the inspiration for so many of us new kids on the block and my first trip to the nats...
TALK ABOUT STAR STRUCK...I HAD NEVER SEEN SO MANY ICON FLYERS THAT I HAD ONLY SEEN IN MAGAZINES BEFORE THAT....
ONE NEVER REALLY FORGETS THEIR FIRST NATS. #^

Post by: Eric Viglione on December 07, 2006, 03:01:38 PM: The loss of an old friend, the Intrepid XL folded it's wing about a half lap after the prettiest hourglass of my life. Musta been too much for it to handle, heh, so it did an abrupt swan lake, or swan dive that is into that V formation you see there in the ground.

The funny thing is, this is the SECOND wing fold for this plane, as the wing folded a couple of years earlier at the KOI. It just came off and fluttered gentley to the ground that time, so I reattached the wing, maybe you can see the plywood scabs in the photos. I got another year or so out of it, this time it went into a hefty bag.

My buddy Bob found out what happens when you try to do vertical eights 90 degees upwind in a windstorm. You know that just can't come out very well. Full, power on, straight into the ground. I've had a couple of rather, uh, colorful crashes. a few that would be contenders for the best of all time, but I've never watched one of my planes go in with someone else at the controls before.

Poor Bob. He'll never live it down. b1

BTW, that's my cute wife holding the plane. I can't get her to do that very often.

Post by: Elwyn Aud on February 13, 2010, 04:19:25 PM: I believe the Humongous crash photo was David Russum's(sp?) work. Here's one that's more splash than crash. Bill Netzeband's Over E Z manages to come down in the only wet spot on the field. I think it was a puddle around a sprinkler head. Not very spectacular, but here's one from Reeves Field this past summer. It was a flame-out so the damage was minimal since it was over grass. You can see the departed prop blades going up and the tail weight coming down.

Perhaps with a little design engineering...
you could actually build a bunch of noses....that could be easily removable to accomodate various engine and tank arrangements? H^^ n~ LL~

Post by: Steve Helmick on February 13, 2010, 09:05:02 PM: This was my last crash. I bought the model off the wall at John Hall's "Sumit Hobby", being sold by Lee Uberbacher. Lee had sold it to Dave Gardner and then ended up buying it back. I never figured out who built it. Anyway, my bifocals (I think) messed up my opinion of where the ground level was on an outside square. My pullout was just somewhat below ground level...it took the blades off and kilt the engine (the wonderful 2Star .60bb that I bought from Hawk), and I made the mistake of continuing to hold full down. It went back into the air, went vertical, turned and hit vertically. DON'T DO THAT! n1 This was at a NW Skyraiders Fun Fly at the Kent field at Riverview Park...aka "Mole Heaven". Those moles need some killin'... y1 Steve

I might have a hard time finding someone to volunteer to start the engine going the removable nose route #^. It may get rebuilt next winter. I got just enough time with it to think it may have been a decent plane HB~>.

Post by: Chad Hill on February 17, 2010, 08:11:16 AM: It was 1970, I was 14 and flying with kinked lines. My Sterling P-51, powered by a G21-35 (now there's a combo) suddenly broke off the lines, and barrel-rolled into a chimney on top of a school about 1/4 mile away. The G21 somehow survived.

I have never flown with kinked lines again... HB~>

Take a look at these faces of the fallen-fellows the lens of the CLPA POPR'NAZI'S' cameras.
I often have heard that one of our very very very very most accomplished and celebrated World famous ICON of CLPA...also was noted for GRABBING HIS CAMERAS for a snapshot AFTER THE CRASH of his fellow competitors..
Name withheld to protect the guilty! A hint of course...he was a mentor to many many many of us CLPA addicts during those early daze.
GADS! I WISH I COULD GET HOLD OF HIS COLLECTION?

Hummmm? PRETTY, PRETTY SICO' but why does it make so many of us (whether we admit it or not) when GRAB THAT VD~CAMERA and then take part in this most inhuman goolish' delight in seeing crashes and accidents to our belove peers and fellow grunsters...moment of tragic events?
Look closely at the pain the faces of these two amazingly gifted modelers?
Humm? It appears that Roger if I remember used the "F***OFF SHULTZIE!" word at the moment I shot this shot! (Hey, McMillen..you were there??? Did your Daddy cover his ears at the time?
