Retreads
« on: March 10, 2008, 12:22:57 AM »
We had an R/C flier turn up at our field toward the end of last summer with a nicely finished Brodak Magician. At our fall contest he entered Balloon Bust and I think he even finished first! A couple of months later his picture (holding his new Magician) appeared in the District 8 section of Model Aviation. We've had to move the flying site fairly soon after the contest but he finally showed up today at the new site with a couple of his fellow R/C buddies. He said he had gotten a lot of response from his photo in the magazine and now several local R/C folk have expressed a desire to pick up the handle again. Today he and his two friends took turns flying his Magician. Perhaps we are looking at an upsurge in C/L activity in our area.

Two things: is that a McCoy 35 on the nose, but with the red paint on the head all gone?

Second, whose idea did he say was the far-rearward stab location he used?  Surely someone noticed and asked.

Hmmm?  OK, three things after all.  That looked like an unmuffled McCoy in photo one, and the paint trim was the same on both sides.  The in-air shots show an OS FP, I think, and an oddly shaped area of white material behind the wing on the outboard side (his McCoy allowed it to bend its tail some?)

I think he had an old Johnson of some sort for power when he first brought it out. The Brodak Magician is a copy of the original smaller Magician and differs a bit from the Midwest version most of us are used to seeing. He still might have moved the elevators back a tad.

I'd noticed the half-ribs, but I also saw the coupled wing flaps.  I flew a couple of Midwest Magicians as a relatively young pilot, one with coupled flaps, and one without.  With the kit's short-coupled tail, the one with fixed flaps flew better, same way a Super Clown flies better with its flaps fixed in place.  I have been told that one or the other of the two I'd flown was later modified with a different fuselage rear end treatment, with the flaps working, that gave it an entire new lease on maneuverability.

The white patch is a Monokote patch quickly applied when an unexpected power-on inverted landing broke the fuselage. We ran it back to my shop, fixed it with CA and patched the covering with scraps. After the flying, they all 3 left with big grins saying boy that was fun.

I'd call that old blackfin engine an OS Max III.

Moving the stab back on Midwest Magicians was an old trick - did my first like that in the 1960's, it greatly improved the performance.

I think Paul made the call on the engine...

Speaking of the old OS engine.. He needs a prop drive washer for it.. Not sure what happened after our September contest but he asked me about it yesterday and I couldn't help him with a drive washer. Anyone have a drive washer for this engine laying around? Would be happy to let him know and you can get together to work out the details..
Thanks

As to the OS MAX III, my buddy's Dad flew a clipped wing CG Shoestring (it was shown on the plans) with one on pressure, Missle Mist, restrictor removed, and a 9-8 Power Prop.   Screaming fast!

The intake stack sure looked more like a Johnson & McCoy (and "Sport Fox 36") slanted variety (a Max III intake is of the trumpet shape), and the shaft looks like it has a bushing part behind the face of the thrust washer like a McCoy.  I can't put my hands on a Johnson or Max III from here, and Bob had the conversation with them about the thrust washer, so what can I say now?

Look close at the top photo, it is one from our old field back in September of 2007.
The third photo is from yesterday, look real close at the venturi...looks like a delrin insert to me.
Regardless it's a different motor than the one he had last September.
I don't think the new style OS muffler that's shown in photo 3 & 4 will work with an OS Max III will it?

BTW Bob it was fun to watch all the action on the webcam. I was at work. I have a double monitor system so I had Autocad up on one monitor and the webcam up on the other. Sure wish I could have been there. Looks like the weather will be nice all week to bad I'm stuck at work.

[/  I got two different OS Max  drive washers that I found in the junk barrel.  Which type does he need--- there are three types.  One is round with two opposing flats, one  is round with one flat side (like a "D") and the third is round with a compression collar.

  Which one does he need?

I just remembered I still have the original full size photo. No webbing in front of the venturi and a flat top- must be a late 50's model.

But that's not the engine that was on the plane yesterday, right?

Nope, yesterday he was running an FP 25.

Was a fantastic day, put 3 flights on the Ring 576 and one on the Skylark. Discovered I needed to add some nose weight to the ring and need a bigger tank in the Skylark. The Saito 40 on the Ring just keeps getting better when I get the airframe trimmed it's going to be a killer. Ran the Skylark with a stock venturi in the ST 51, it ran great but for only 4 1/2 minutes.

Still recovering from nitrate hell on the new ship but it's getting there..

Looking at the later photos of the Johnson with the web behind the venturi joiuned to the case with a hole in it and a plain bearing besides.  It has to be the Sport Special which was a .32.  My brother bought the only one Charlie could get in the hobby shop.  DOC Holliday

That is NOT a Sport Special. That is an early small shaft Johnson. The Sport Special is a large shaft engine.
