Title: Restoring an old thunderbird - Bob Palmer's Tribute
Post by: Miguel Poduje on December 09, 2014, 11:16:03 AM
Hi, My Name is Miguel Poduje, from Chile. I want to post my Thunderbird restoration Job posted in others control line forum.. but i thik this is the right place to share my experience.

Please, excuse me about my english, i try to do the my best, without using google translator because i know the results are more incomprensive than tarzan's english  ;D.

many years ago, my father built a thunderbird from an old kit. he flew this model for many years, receiving two top overhaull. Then this model was stored in a warehouse and was there for a long time (more than 15 years). My father put the house for rent, leaving the old thud forgotten in time in that darkness.
A few months ago, we went to the house and discovered that the old thud was still there hanging on the wall, very dirty and semi destroyed but in much better shape than I thought.

The first thing I did was take it and take it home, talk to my father about the many memories we had of that plane and try to find ways to put it off again.

Two weeks ago we started the reconstruction of the old Thud and here I leave some pictures of this process that I hope will end soon and the old Thud back to fly again after more than 30 years.

The wing had a twist, but we are solving wetting the wood and insert webs  between the spars. The flaps must be changed and we are still thinking about what to do with the nose that is too impregnated with fuel.
This Tbird had the engine up and the cowl was lost. Now I'm thinking if it's better to do the same or do the version with radial cowl. My intention is to paint as the original Bob Palmerīs Tbird (white, red and black), even place the same letters AMA 19488 in the wings.
I could not find good pictures of Palmer's TBird, i have not found good pictures with the radial cowl version. Anyone have any good photo to use as a guide?

Ok friends.
I decided to improvise on the radial cowl. This weekend I will visit a craftsman who had a wood lathe in order to build the master which will i do the mold in fiberglass. The advantage, is if i making the mold, i can do several tests to find the best solution that i want. Thanks for all your attention to my project. I will keep you informed.

i post these new photos showing the tbird progress, I hope that the pieces purchased in brodak arrive soon. This Saturday I'll go to the wood craftsman to make me the master of the cowl.

Thnaks !!

I just received the master mold to build the fiberglass cowl. Now need a lot of polish work  to get it ready to start work in fiberglass.

We are in the best stage !!!  Dope !!!:p  :D

We have received the polyspan from BJMR  models ... I must say I have been very impressed with polyspan, I was accustomed to using silkspan but this is much easier and much better result. We are now in the hard work ... dope, sanding,  dope, sanding, dope, sanding, dope, sanding, dope, sanding, dope, sanding....

You can see that the fuselage sides are curved and are waiting to dry.to dry in place.

All plane are covered with polyspan, ihave some troubles with bubbles, but workerd hard with sandpaper an dope to eliminate all.
Now, the plane are readey to paint. I bought poliuretane paint  with a little change in the colors... i replace the red with a metallic italian red, the white will be a "cream" wihite... this colors looks more classic  .

So far the progress in painting have been few because the weather in Santiago is not good. We have done some testing but  the humidity  affects the paint job.
For now I have been working on the logo and these are the results.

If anyone wants these files in adobe illustrator, send me a message and I will gladly send them.

is very difficult to paint with poliuretane and this weather...

You can see i replace the original colors (white and red) with a more classical creme and metallic dark red.  The schema will be the same as the original Bob Palmerīs Thud.

The final weight is 1420 grams.  Off course, the engine is heavier than old foxs or vecos, then i reduce the nose arm 1 1/2 inches in order to balance.

MAIDEN FLIGHT !!!!

In windy conditions, last saturday i did the first fly of  the Thud. Very stable and the engine works fine...  no manouvers in this flight , because the wind was hard and turbulent.

Great flight !!!  i'm very happy, the restoration are finsh,

Nice job BUT I hope you did not reuse that plastic elevator horn.  ~^They were bad when new. Now it is old it will fail very quick. The plastic vertical arm came loose from the metal arms. It was criminal to even sell them.
Tell me you did not use it. What about the flap horn??? n1

Thanks for your words...  sorry again for my english  i try to do my best. I'm very happy with this restoration because is a excellent work with my father that did more than 80% of work, and my son that worked on graphics for me.

Thanks again.

Ed, don't worry, we replaced all horns, and pushrod. The bellcrank is trhe same, because is an old and original veco part, only replace the brass bushing, bolt and cables.

Thanks for your words.

Miguel.
