Replica Battery Scan Needed
« on: October 22, 2017, 02:32:57 PM »
Hi Guys,  Remember me?     I'm back in the saddle again.     y1

Would any of you super talented computer graphics guys happen to have a full size, clean, bright scan of all 6 sides of this puppy?  I'd like to make a replica with new re-chargeable innards and need a scan of all the sides.

I already have some other replica scans of the old Eveready and Rayovac cylinder dry cells, but, I really like this old Cox battery.

Those old battery cover would let loose at the seems and they would unfold after a while. If you steam the thing it may do that, and then you can lay it on a color copy machine or flat bed scanner to make copies. I don't know if I have one of those or not but I'm going through things today and if I run across one I'll let you know. I have made the round type cells and powered them with Cylone 2 volt rechargeable batteries, I think there are pics on the forum here some where. That size shpould even hold four "C" size dry cells in parallel, and you could build one you could open up and rebuild with fresh cells. That is what I was kind of thinking about last time I messed with them.

Found this on Fleabay. Might want to get it, scan it. When dead, make rechargeable like you want.--Just a suggestion

I've got that one, an all red version, and a Ray-O-Vac (I think) that is yellow and red. Don't have time tonight to get them unfolded and coax my scanner into working, but will get at it when I get home from work tomorrow afternoon. PM me your email address so I can send the files when finished.
The red ones are kind of stained, but maybe you know some one that can touch up the files on a computer with Photoshop or something. They should lay out nice and flat. Run off a good color copy, then paste it to something like cereal box chip board with contact cement, cut out, and fold where necessary to assemble. The one you posted came from the #400 Cox Starting kit with the fuel can about the same colors.

A scan ? Would large full size pics emailed to you work? I have a brand new battery I could take plenty of pics of.

Just in case, when you get your scanner working scan all five sides that you can get to and take a picture of the top, in case your efforts at steaming the thing apart fail.

Cool idea.

If you laid it on a Scanner/printer and scanned all sided, the scans can then be printed out at actual size, and glued to a battery box, I'd make.

I just tried to redraw it from your pic.

Still need some work.

Lay it on a scanner.  make sure it is square and I can trace it.

I used inkscape. an open source program

I don't have one, I just copied a photo off the interwebs.
That's pretty cool for just tracing it.  I might be able to use that if no one else can do an actual scan.

I have it and am starting to work on it.

The type fonts are not exact but it is representative. Someone that real good with gimp or adobe illustrator could whip this out real quick. I am not real fast as an artist

Curt,

Yes I got a few scans from Mr. McEntee.  He sent not only the Cox, but also a different Cox Battery and a really cool scan of an old Ray-O-Vac battery that is pretty faded.  I would love to figure out how to enhance the color on it.  Living in WI and with Ray-O-Vac only a few miles away in Madison, I think that was my first Hobby battery when I was about 12 years old.  That one, I'm going to use somehow.

If you have do have one in good condition, I'd like to see it, if it's not too much trouble.

As it turned out, mine was brand new and still in a sealed plastic bag. I opened it today and removed the batteries and as you would expect, they were corroded. That said, the box was still in pretty great shape with only slight fading and deterioration at the edges/corners. I un-folded it and scanned it with a contrasting color background so as to see the edges of the original. In spite of it being NOS, there were still quite a few imperfections that needed to be re-touched. I am working with it in Photoshop and should have it done by the end of next week.

Curt,
Wow, that's great.  could you send the scan before retouching it and then after?
I just might use the old scans and the new scans.

Thanks again, this is very nice.  Nice of all of you that have made the time to help me out.

I would do the thing if I had the time. I honestly don't have the time.

However, I would ask for the can, to return of course, and not for scanning. Just for measurements and to copy.

I would draw the art from scratch in a vector file.

But that's me.

But then, it would be re-drawn and not re-touched. More a replica than a restored original.

Curt,

The original is on the can.

Better to draw it from scratch over the scan, it'll be easier. At least for me it will be because I'll use a vector file.

Probably easier to match colors with Photoshop. Fine tune color with test prints.

Colors on the can could be faded? Could?

This is an interesting challenge.
