Title: Removable wing for an I-Beam
Post by: James Mills on December 04, 2009, 06:31:30 PM
I'm planning to build a Colossus from an Umland kit and would like to build it so the wing is removable.  Does anyone have any suggestions and or pictures to help?

Thanks,

James

the Cobra 60 by Henk De Jong also has a removable wing - it is I-beam also.  The main wing comes off in once piece, much like the Impact

I've got plans for an I-beam that will have plug in wings. That should be fun.

I think an I-Beam is a natural for plug in wings, less so for a 1-piece bolt-on wing - hoping to start one in a week or two...

Something I forgot to comment: The beam is sheeted with .007" unidirectional carbon fiber on both sides.

Would it not be easier to make the wing in two halves, and slide them on to a carbon fibre joiner. The I beam would make an ideal receptacle for the joiner, probably lighter than all the plywood and bolts needed for a bolt on one piece wing? The fuselage would be stronger at that point too!

A yet unproven "take appart"  that I have been looking at. the Alum. bar would be heavy, thinking carbon fiber or phenoic could be used in place of Alum. This could probably be adapted to an I-beam wing--- Any thoughts?
