Remote needle mount broke on OS .25 FP
« on: May 05, 2015, 04:34:01 PM »
Made two flights on my Ukey.  After first flight noticed remote needle mount was broken off the backplate and needle was held by fuel line only.  Second flight I made sure fuel line was loosely rubber banded out of the way and just let the needle float.  It flew fine.   I know I could get a regular nva but the remote has saved a few needle stems.  Is it OK to float a remote needle?

Hi John -

In Brett Buck's comments on his FP-20/Flite Streak set-up, he mentions running the remote loose on the fuel lines like that with no problem.
As an alternative, it's simple/easy to make a thin aluminum mount to replace your broken one.

You may have misunderstood or I might have been unclear, but I don't recall doing that (at least, not on purpose). All mine have been mounted to something or another, unless they were broken off in flight. I would expect you want it mounted somehow.

Of course the only important fact is - does it run OK? Apparently it did in the case above, so, I wouldn't spend a lot of time worrying about "supposed tos".

There has to be a ton of those floating around as they get replaced with aluminum. You could put a lug under a motor mount bolt and wire it to that.

Mea culpa Brett - it was in Dirty Dan's treatise on the set-up.
He comments:
"And so when dealing with the remote NVA, I first found some totally nasty (fluorescent green) silicone tubing and then intentionally left NVA to simply flop around, held in place only by tubing from tank to NVA, tubing from NVA to inlet at venturi.

This works!! NVA is nicely isolated from vibration, is tucked down and out of the way for those inverted landings, comes readily to hand when needling the mix as the knob on needle faces to the rear. Try it!"

combat guys do that all the time.  you can us a control horn as a bracket and mount the needle to that, screw the horn to the airplane.  you can hide the needle and make it a lot more protected as well.  It makes the needle a lot more crash resistant.

Thank you for your responses.  I think I will let the needle float on the tubing for now and see how it goes.

Make the needle valve bracket out of 1/16in nylon.  The OS steel mount fails from fatigue pretty quickly.  You can attach it almost anywhere.  Putting it above the tank can cause starting problems- the fuel tends to drain back into the tank.  Cutting up a large control horn, you can make a mount(for profiles) that will put the needle valve stem pointing to the right near the engine centerline to fix that problem.
