Recomendations for a .15 size engine
« on: September 19, 2017, 07:09:40 PM »
I want to build a .15 size model but have never built anything that small for a glow engine.  What is a good reliable brand for a .15 size?

Thank you
Mike

I don't like ebay very much either, especially since ebay and paypal split. So now there's double fees when selling.
Any way! Bob (shttrman) is awesome. Excellent service and tons of os and enya parts. I just ordered some two nights ago for my enya 60

Hi Brett

I may build a profile Peacemaker and I thought a .15 would be good on it.  This is not for flying in contests, all I do is fly for fun on Sundays with the guys in the club.  I have two Lou Woolard  Silver FOX 40 but have never put them on anything as of yet.  I actually had not thought of FOX for the 15 size.  Thank you for the suggestion.

I just remind you that any form of streamlining is prohibited by Rule 6. The use of a Sterling Mambo is specifically called out, but the intent is clear and I am sure a Peacemaker is also prohibited.

Mike, I have a OS LA .15 on a Ukey 15 and it pulls it with authority. My next plane for it will be the RSM P-51, which was designed specifically as a flapped stunt trainer using a .15 size engine.

The Enya 15CXS is available direct from Enya:

http://www.enya-engine.com/store15/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_9&products_id=565

Current price is $105.63 from them. I just buy direct from Bob Brooks and avoid his Ebay store. Email him at shtterman@aol.com

Mike, I have an early OS 15 series 3 than you can have if you want it, I'll never use it, however it does require 25% castor fuel as it is an old engine, let me know and it is yours...

Hey, try a rather rare Riley Wooten COMFAI (Flying Models - 1956 vintage magazine plan) with a K&B Torpedo .15 Greenhead engine (Riley's engine choice)...  (I built one with this engine in 1967 and it flew great).  Of course, many of us live in the past and enjoy the planes from our early years and yes, we are truly the last of a dying breed.      y1    D>K      H^^

Mike while I think the Enya option is very good... Tower's RC .15 OS LA for $89 and cost of Lee Machine venturi and NVA might be the better option in a NEW engine

Literally no break in needed for the OS LA vs Enya ( I like the Enya) .... OS LA is slightly lighter

Before you decide, check out and search .15s on RC groups and RC universe....I have seen this size in ridiculous low prices

Hey Mike,

You might consider building Igor Burger's smaller plane, the "Tiny".  It was designed for use with a .15 and it's a modern design.

It would be a very easy plane for you to build as the "Tiny" and the "Ground Fault" share the same design philosophy and most dimensions.  Conveniently, the Tiny and the Ground Fault share the same wing root and tip, just less overall span.  You could use the same laser cut fuselage from your Ground Fault RSM kit and just cut 1cm off the nose (or leave it as-is, as you might need nose weight.)

Wingspan: 1 meter /39.37" - 356.5 Sq In
Stab/Elev: 46cm / 18.1" span, 93 sq. in.  ~25% of wing
Nose to Leading edge: 17cm / 6-11/16"
Hinge to Hinge: 15"

Have RSM zap some ribs and a fuselage and you're off to a good start.

Power it with a LA15, FP15, Magnum 15, ect.  (I have a little MRC Enya 15 if you're interested.)

Hi Brent

I kitted the Ground Fault about two years ago.  I produced a glow and electric version.  It was not one of my better selling kits but I built the electric version myself and it flew really well.  I still fly it often.

The Enya .15 CSX is an ABC motor so requires no more break-in than an OS. Also, the OS is rated at .4HP while the Enya at .52HP. By the time you buy an OS Max (if new), replace the remote needle valve with a venturi and NVA, replace the junk plastic backplate, you'll end up with as much money in it, if not more, than the Enya. And less power to boot.

Don't get me wrong, the OS is a good motor but ounce for ounce, I get much better performance and longevity from my Enyas. That said, a good OS FP or LA will pull any small plane around with authority.

I like RC Groups. I've bought probably 15 engines off there.
Best Regards,
Bill

OS Fp15s around. Neat to run them hard. I've had a few on jr Streaks, fast fun. Loved these. Set them up with a two ounce chicken hopper. They need perhaps a half ounce tail weight. These are half/a size planes, actually. I've an 09Enya I plan to mount on the next jr. Streak. Slow it down, reduce weight. Possible to do the pattern with the 15. Impressive, since too fast judge shapes much. A friend set up a Magician 15 like this. Practiced the pattern double speed. He wins a lot. Guess that served him well.

I am so hard headed I got to argue a bit...I am an Old Enya guy and I do love them.....brother Bill is correct...great engine

But I know Mike a bit, and think for his initial question the OS LA .15 is just a better fit... he (like a lot of us old farts) does not have the life time left to wear out any of the good .15s

MY experience is that the OS LA series---IS
1. Slightly cheaper
2. Slightly lighter
3. Eats a pretty wide variety of fuels...predictably
4. Easy prop selection
5. Not real finicky on tank type.... suction, pressure, uniflo, standard vet, clunk all seem to be real easy to set up and predict

There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with choosing a new Enya .15 CSX...some what hard to find  IMO.... the older Enya .15s are exponentially more problematic to set up easily... certainly true for any used ones....that have unknown run time and care

If I was 45 again I would choose the Enya over the OS....just because I know it will out last the low end LA series from OS

BUT IMO--- right now a factory fresh OS LA .15 ----is darned good bang for the buck---- I have seen them from Tower for $89 and on the various universe and groups places for under $50

We're using the ASP and Magnum 15 for Sport Goodyear. They are a really nice little engine: dual ball bearing, true ABC. They run very well and are a super motor for a very low price.

You can get them from Melvin Schuette at MBSModelSupply.com, or from Bill Bischoff. CL venturi is available from either source as well since they come with an RC carb.

I want to thank everyone for the great input on this thread.  I have secured a couple of engines to use.  Now I have to decide which .15 size model to build to put them in.  These small models are new territory for me so it should be fun getting something built and ready to fly.
