Recent PDF hassles
« on: August 09, 2017, 12:15:10 PM »
Have noticed recently that PDF files I've saved, now claim to be "Firefox HTML Documents", and I can't find a way to open them.

I was trying to open the Golden State Stunt Champs info PDF, then tried Brian Eather's prop list PDF, then tried to open the Don Hutchinson B-25 PDF files, which I bought and paid for. None would open. Last week, I managed to open some of Matt's famous PDF's, by right clicking and then "open". Doesn't work this week. I'm rather PO'd at this point, and blaming Firefox. Does Firefox software come from Adobe? This has nothing to do with Stunt Hangar, to be 100% clear. Can anybody help?  '' Steve

Steve - The problem isn't your Firefox per say. It is your windows default file association that has been changed from Adobe Acrobat Reader to Firefox.

To set File Associations in Windows 10/8/7, Open Control Panel > Control Panel Home > Default Programs > Set Associations. Select a file type in the list and click Change Program. You will be displayed a list of Programs along with a Description and the Current Default. Find *.pdf and change the program used to open them from Firefox to Acrobat or whatever your default was before.

Or, you could uninstall/re-install Acrobat Reader, and let it change it back for you.

Just be happy that it's not saying your documents are all encrypted. If you think you're ticked off now... you haven't seen anything yet.
Hope that helps,
EricV

Frustration! I used to be able to open "control panel" and do a lot of that sort of stuff...but then along came Win10 and I can't find a way to do it anymore.

I copied, pasted & printed Eric V.'s post. Please back it up a step or two and tell me how to open Control Panel in Win10!  R%%%% Steve

PS: When did a "program" become an "App" and why?

I may have done something good, because now I can right-click on the file and get an option to open with Adobe Reader. Before, that wasn't an option. However, I didn't get a button to "always open with"....or just don't see it. In any case, I can now double left-click on the file icon and it opens, which it didn't previously. I guess I should count my blessings, but I'm feeling some hate toward Billy Gates...perhaps misdirected, but I don't know anybody else to blame. Anybody else?   S?P Steve

Blame the nerds that put their time in there as they keep trying to fix what isn't broken. VD~

If you truly hate the Win10 interface, download and install Classic Shell from classicshell.net and it will return your menu to looking like win7 (works great, and is safer if you ask me, because win10 uses active content in the default menu, it is a malware and virus risk)

Otherwise, control panel is now an app in the start/apps/windows system folder

I just run my Win 10 to boot into full "desktop mode" and don't do anything with the Win 10 live tile interface (except delete the live tiles - although I did keep Settings).  Made desktop icons for control panel and others that I use regularly and lives just like Win 7.  Tried Classic Shell in Win 8 but just went back to desktop mode.

On a side note, just found out about the Windows "Snipping Too"l after all these years.  Much more usable than PrintScreen / paste into Paint.

Just my $.02

Well...if I right click on the windows icon in the lower left corner of the screen. What do I click on to get to control panel? Top of the drop down menu is "Apps & Features". Still no route to control panel that I can see.

That aside, I got the PDF problem fixed, and at least bookmarked the Classic Shell website. You'd think MS would fix their own sh't.  H^^ Steve

Just type in "Control Panel" in the Search Box next to the Win icon.  When it comes up in the list, right click on it for options to do with it.

11290...that was too easy...almost. Why do they have to completely change the way stuff works all the time? I guess they never heard of "fine tuning"? Seems to me like they do it for job security, but instead of fine tuning a product, they just scrap it (and make it go obsolete and not work sometime in the near future) and sell us another new (defective) product. I may go fish in front of Billy Gates' house Friday, in retaliation.  VD~ Steve
