Really, Really Off Topic! But need a Bit Of Help!
« on: July 03, 2016, 10:12:21 AM »
I have been finally clearing out some of my late younger brother's tool boxes from his machine shop, and have run across an unusual tape. It is quite large and has the following  on it: 1.181-36 BSW. So far I have determined that it is probably Whitworth threads? It's a six flute starting tap and brand new in the plastic tube. There are guys on the forum here that are in many different lines of industrial work and I was hoping some one cal tell me what it is, so then I can find some one that can probably use it. My brother ran a small, one and sometimes two man operation and did some really odd and amazing thing at his shop and I can't imagine what this was for, other than maybe for something British automotive wise? If anyone knows what it is, or can use it, please contact me.
Thanks a lot in advance and HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!!

If it is British Standard or Whitworth, check here on Bartons. They would know.

We would call it a 1 3/16-36 Whitworth tap. It is definitely a non standard diameter and pitch. It does not show up in Machinery's Handbook.

Put it on eBay with a "Buy It Now" price of $250. You might get a bidding war started and make some coin off it.   y1 Steve

On a hunch I did a conversion from inch to mm and the diameter is 30mm (or to be really precise 29.9974). To me that's too close to be a coincidence. The 36 tpi pitch is extremely fine for something of that size though, especially for an archaic BSW :).

Thanks for the input so far. Not bad for a holiday weekend and everyone is busy doing some thing else! I wish I had some contacts for British car enthusiasts. I found a part laying on a work bench, that once I got it cleaned up and talked to a local friend of his, discovered it was a front spindle off a 1980's vintage Lola Indy car! Don't know what the thing was there for, but no one claimed it, and the same friend asked if he could have it. he and Jimmy were good friends and knew each other a long time, and this guy's Dad ran a race shop in Indy about that time period. Makes me wonder if he was going to make a knock off or something for that spindle? it is a very fine pitch thread, but even for a wheel knock off I don't think you would go that fine. The mystery continues, but the answer is out there somewhere.

It's been a very long time ago that I raced Flat Track on a Track-master Triumph 750 (about 1970 - 71, Switched to Yamaha after that) but I seem to remember something about a large very fine whitworth or BA special thread on a drain plug for the crankcase.  Plug was in a fairly thin section of the case...hence the fine thread...Not sure about this but it does stick in my mind!

Old Triumphs had a lot of strange stuff on them (strange to Americans anyway).

Might investigate it further.

The British bikes used both Whitworth & Metric nuts & bolts.  Royal Enfield used Whitworth & I believe Norton did as well because my roommate always borrowed my set I believe Triumph used Whitworth & I believe BSA   used metric.'
