Really Frigid Digits

Hi Guys,

Here's some photos of yesterday mornings flying conditions.
It was just a little chilly, freezing fog.
Still, we got in 4 flights before the frostbite won!

What I forgot to say was the when we packed up we were flying with 1/8 inch dia lines (0.018 stranded core with ice jackets) and the ice ran to 6/10 feet from the handle. The bow in the lines had to be seen to be believed

All the leading edges were encased in ice (wing,stab, fin and cowl) so I can say it was not a good day for trimming...

Well, If they ever give an award for being a "hardcore flier" you should definitely be in the running. I bet a scale model with a de-icing system would be a first.

Well spotted Ty.

I'm in the process of trimming it. Flies very smoothly. Enya SS40 S PL provides the urge. I've just over 1 hour of running on the motor and the whole package is coming together nicely.

For now I've set 1:1 flap elevator ratio, and been adjusting the handle to get the most out of it.

I've no idea as to the weight, but it feels lighter than my buddies profile Cardinal with an Enya 45 (motors are same weight).

The previous weeks session was more to get the engine sorted - new engine, home made uniflow etc etc. Keeps a steady note, upright and inverted until about 1/4 lap from the end of the tank - perfect! I was hoping to get the model flight trimmed on Sunday, but it was not to be.

Model was built from plans and so far the trimming has been minimal, apart from adjusting the leadout position I can say it has flown straight off the board. I reckon it'll teach me the rest of the schedule (cloverleaf) and get the rest of my manoeuvres into a recognisable shape.

PS: Nice engine, even in that cold it started promptly by hand, our electric starter gave up the ghost.

Thanks for the engine report. I just got mine and thinking about puttin it  in a Thunderbird. That flying session looks like the freezing rain we get in Oregon. We used to fly in thirty six degree weather when I was a kid in norteastern Montana. We thought it was warm at that temp but it didn't stay that way but only a couple of hours.
