Title: RCATS Glow Driver
Post by: Steve Helmick on June 04, 2013, 04:49:27 PM
I'm thinking about begging for one of these for B'day and F'day...Central Hobbies has them for $120 and the soft bootie is another $10 or so. Does anybody know of a screamin' deal on them anyplace online? Or maybe some of you electro-power converts have one for sale?  H^^ Steve

I consider mine the best thing that's happened to IC engines for a long time, and no it's not for sale.
For what it's worth I paid a little more than that for mine and consider it the best deal I ever got on any CL equipment.  I've had it for about six months and used it a lot.  I think I will probably have to charge it sometime next year!

Stop grousing and just buy the thing!  Yes, get the cover too!

Burt Brokaw (Big Time Carrier Guy) convinced me.  He's been using one for several years with terriffic results!

I have this one, actually the MK II.

Only issue is remembering to hit the start button.

Not quite as pricy but will not be without it.

We can talk about that. I still want to put a pipe in a Shark 45...at least, it's just a muffler, right? How many electrons are you planning to carry?  ;) Steve

Best glo driver I've ever had.  If you buy direct from RCATS they will set the "on" duration for up to 15 minutes if you want it.  I've been using mine, with the stock 45 sec on,for racing for several years, only had it go out once when I had forgotten to recharge it for a year!  I just push the on button at 15 seconds in the start countdown, then restart on the glide lap after the engine cuts for a pit stop.

Yes, that's the plan. See you there! And randy Randy!!

Steve,

You won't see me. I'll be lounging on a beach the second two weeks of June. Probably won't see me till August sometime except maybe flying at Auburn.

So you'll be lounge lizarding, eh? Jeez...are you over your sprains yet?  So, do you use an RCATS glow driver too? I know, I know... too many questions. Send Schultzie over to Pulleypoop to kibitz at the Stunt-a-Thun. Howard will get him all excited about adding VG's to his kites... LL~ Steve

I think Randy still uses the C cell nicad units,, you know the ones that never seem to hold a charge,, or have enough poop to light a wet plug?,, yeah those,, now Pat uses an RCATS unit,, His was the first I saw,, mine was the second,, ( like a month later),,

I've decided to use a car battery. Maybe it will hold a charge.

Steve,

The RCATS factory web site has a sale on the unit for $20 off and $3 off the glove.

BTW, has anyone done a comparison between the RCATS unit and the RadioSouth unit?

I have not done anything direct,, but,, the pylon racing guys seem to give them a harder workout than we do,, and I see more and more of the RCATS systems lately
though at first it was the Radio south unit,,

I am so tired of charging drivers that I bought one yesterday. At 76years old  I really think this is the last buy of this nature I will ever make.

Just a hint,, th eONLY problem I have had,, other than not charging it for a year,, and realizing it on the way to the contest,, ( things you dont do often), it still worked fine for the contest,, there can be a tendancy for there to be some stress on the cord where it exits the housing,, I installed a Deans connector in line so that should the cord get pulled, it will not break the wire exiting the housing, it will simply pull the connector apart

Since I have never seen one, I am just looking at the pictures on their web sites. It looks as though they have snap on glow driver type connection. Is there any way to use something like the Magnum Glow Plug Clip or alligator clips? Since I am on blood thinners, I try to keep my fingers as far from the prop as possible.

If you do like I did,, solder in a Deans,, then you can use multiple clips , I have a different clip I use for Pylon racing,,

See Mark's solution to pulling the cord out of the case. Make yourself a couple of cords that use the same Deans connector, and put whatever you want on the other end.

I kinda hate to admit it, but I'm going to use a 7amp Gel Cell in my "pit box" and the power panel/glow driver do its thing. I have one power panel that is automatic, which is a concept I typically dislike, but for this use, it may be the best plot. I'll find out, I guess. Part of the deal is that I want about a 4'-5' cord, and also want to use a variety of connectors at the airplane or glowplug.

FYI, I'll be 68 this month, and take a real asprin a day...when I get started leaking blood, it gets messy pretty fast! In early May, I sliced open my right pinky finger on a prop...a 5 blade Quicksilver, taking it off my 150 hp Merc outboard. Pinched it between the TE and cavitation plate. It was NOT a pretty sight, but it did reduce my blood pressure somewhat! Fixed it with an elastic Band-Aid...  :o

Steve,, you would be happier with the RCATS,, its a LOT lighter to carry to the ready circle than that nasty flight box,, plus,, its way cooler,,,
there are electronic advantages,, the current sensing,, load adjustment for wet plugs and the like

of course, if you went to say,, oh,, a 4S 4000 mah pack IN the airplane,, you would not need any of that nonsense,, LL~

The only caution for this is to be careful about not changing the total resistance in the lead.  In other words the length needs to remain about the same or the coding for the lights that tell you whether the plug is dry or flooded or OK will be screwed up.
I talked to the guy at the factory and he said they could supply it with just about any length or type of connector easily available but the unit had to be recalibrated for the different line resistance.

Mark, I much prefer to use a pit box to losing various items in my pockets. THE WORST thing is to pit for somebody who leaves me with a pile of stuff to collect as I dodge out of the circle...ignitor, tach, rag, kneeling pad, my own kneeling pad...potential for a stunter in the back of the head! The pilot should clear his chit out of the circle before he heads to the handle.

And OBTW...fly 'lectric if you want, but I'm not going to. It would be better for all if you electric guys would just stop pissing us off! Electrics have got lots of advantages, that's obvious enough. Some of us just don't want to do that, so leave it be!   R%%%%

Steve,, surely you know enough about me by now to know I am yanking your chain,, Each to their own for power,, not a problem there,, I was just teasing because I know how you feel about lectrics,, smile bud,,

I have both.  The Radio South one stays home and has since I got the RCATS.

I use a typical 7amp/hour battery like most R/C flyers use, and a power panel. I can usually find power panels at swap meets for 5 or 10 bucks, and get good used batteries where I work. I charge them about once a year. maybe less. I made small box to hold it plus a few tools and some glow plugs, just the minimum I might need at the circle. I make up a set of leads for each style plug connector that is 6 feet long. That way, I set the box beyond my wing tip and behind it when starting. Once the engine is started, I disconnect the clip from the plug and give it a gentle toss toward the box, and it's already outside the circle if I forget to move the box, which I usually do while the engine is warming up. I've worn out two power panels over the last 25 years or so, and just built my second box out of scrap wood from work to replace the original, which was falling apart. With the wire length compensated for by the adjustment knob, I always get good power to the plug, and have never burned one out, and rarely ever adjust it once it's set, unless I bump it accidently. I rarely use and electric starter, but have the capability to use one with this set up, and I can charge other people's single nicad cells off it also. In an event where the battery does die, I have charged it up enough off my car battery witha pair of jumper cable to get me through a flying session. I like the flexablity of this set up and all components are pretty common.
 Type at you later,

i have used both scats and radio south  ,radio south is bigger but use's newer type batt and has an on-off swith ,mine is almost 10 years old and just now put new Batt's in it ,it gives u more worning before going dead
