Raptors-N-Blue
« on: September 25, 2014, 10:51:27 AM »
I have been flying off some ball diamonds at the end of my street. They are surrounded by residential on 3 sides and a open area with lots on places for dinner to hide so there are a LOT of birds of prey in the area.Last week there was a Redtail hawk in the yard across the street trying to get a rabbit.I have been visited several times by a Redtail and it leaves after a short time only having it come after my Noblearf a couple times. If I see one in the area I'll wait a bit before flying. There is a little Falcon of some sort however that has agressively pursued my blue ship in the air and yesterday went after it in the clover and circled, went after it again on landing and I had to play scarecrow to get it to fly away. It's smaller than the hawk and hard to see...............until it makes an attempt at the ship.Is it just my Blue aircraft?Anyone know of a color that does'nt draw bird of prey attention?

Sparky,
Would something like that be found at a farm supply store?Maybe I could put it atop one of my "Sweet spot" poles.I use speaker stands and they telescope to about 9 feet.I just need to make sure the 4.5 to 6 feet markers stay where they belong.

Farm store may have them or the internet. I use one to chase birds from my gutters. Owl is a wicked bird of prey and the others recognize it as a threat.

Also try your local hunting/fishing outlet like Cabela's!

A Kroger near me had problems with pigeons (who doesn't) roosting in areas above the main entrance.  Of course, the pigeons make quite a mess.  The solution?  Put these big plastic owls up there to scare the pigeons away.

Every time I looked up, there was a pigeon sitting on the head of a plastic owl, with quite a few droppings on it as well.

I think the owls have been removed and other remedies taken to get rid of the pigeons.

Keep moving the owl. If you let it sit too long in one spot they get use to it.

There's a medium sized hawk that is very "interested" in my white Vector 40.  If I switch to my red Thunderbird, it leaves, everytime.

Some birds are just too smart.  They soon realize that the owls are no threat.  And, I doubt if the Kroger employees wanted to climb up there every few days, slipping on bird droppings just to move an ineffective plastic owl a few feet.

Better to find another method.  I do not know what the Kroger management did but I see very few pigeons now.

Try flying an AMA fast combat model or a FAI combat model when they get to be a problem.

I  too have had hawks hover above my flying circle. To date they haven't attacked the plane yet.

Hey, I read the title and thought you were going to talk about F-22's in the middle east!  Oh well.

Decoy owls are commonly used to keep seagulls from perching on moored boats. West Marine has some in their catalog from $20 to $25 along with some bird deterring balloons.
