Doug, I want to offer my congratulations too for well deserved and hard earned wins at the NAT'S! You won over the best. Shows what talent and dog-eared determination can do. I saw your NAT'S plane at the June Dallas contest - real work of art on the paint scheme and application.

Hello,

Sorry it took so long to get back to you on this thread.

Here are the particulars. Bob Gieseke originally designed and built this model around 1999-2000-2001. I built my first one in 2002. I have built several since then. Here are the numbers and some of the build particulars of mine.

The wing is a Bill Werwage Geobolt. Wing span is 63” and it does not use full span flaps. The flap area behind the tips is fixed inboard and a trim tab outboard. It has wing gear. The flaps are built up and sheeted. The LE of the flaps is round and built up as well to create centered and even hinge slots.

The stab and elevator follow the style of the Gieseke Nobler with tip plates added. They are built up. The stab and elevator are 26% of the wing area and ½” thick flat with a round LE and TE on the stab and round LE on the elevators with a taper to 1/8” at the TE. The stab span is 29”.

The nose moment is 9” and the tail moment is 17 ¾”. Maple motor mounts all the way out to the nose ring. The wing is relieved 1” at the front inside the fuse to help accommodate the 8oz Sullivan clunk tank. It uses molded top and bottom shells from 3/32” balsa with no formers and a full pipe tunnel. The pipe cutout is lined with 6oz. carbon attached with pro-set epoxy. This strengthens the cut out area and removes any weakness or possible stress risers in this area of the model where the rear block meet the pipe tunnel.

The finish; wing, stab, and elevator are covered with Polyspan with Sig nitrate dope thinned 50% Sig thinner. The fuse is covered with fiber glass veil with Sig nitrate dope thinned 50%. Two more coats of sig dope thinned 50%. One more with a lot of Zinc Starate(sp). Two very thinned coats of automotive primer sprayed down VERY dry so the hot thinner doesn’t attack anything since there is so much of it. Goal is to try to keep the weight down. Paint is Omni base coats. Clear is PPG 4-1-1, I use reducer in the clear depending on the temps outside. It helps it flow out better and absorb any overspray you may get while spraying.

Is there a aero advantage to a rounded TE for the stab and a rounded LE for the elevator at the hinge line? Also I was thinking about making my next set of flaps dead flat and not tappered, like 1/4 or 5/16? think but not tapper?

I find it fascinating that, growing up in New York City, Jose Modesto and I, were always hearing about “these Texans”. For me personally, they were always a mystery, but the one thing I knew, whoever they were, they just would not seem to “roll over”.

From what we heard about Bob Gieske, he didn’t care what you were flying-he didn’t care how big or powerful your ship was. He just would not quit with that little red Nobler of his, until he prevailed. Lampione went up against them and came out on top, and I thought that was the end of it. But they just kept coming.

When Al Rabe came back to take out the BIG BOSS MAN-Gene Schaeffer, I knew then and there, they meant business! Hard to believe, as I write this, I am currently 200 miles south of the current Open National Champion-Doug Moon, again a Texan. The fact that he was facing a 10X United States National Champion, didn’t matter-same thing, he just never stopped coming.

From what I understand, if you become the target of the Texas Rangers, (yes they are an active police force) they WILL NEVER stop until they apprehend you.

Well, lets see if maybe, I can absorb some of this Texas mojo. Looks like I am going to need it.

I don't think there is much advantage if any to the rounded TE of the stab and LE of the elevators. I have had good luck with that so I continue to use it.

My flaps are not tapered. I just sand off the back end to make them presentable. I have used tapered flaps in the past. But I have had better consistency with non tapered so I stick with those.

supplier for the RC Pattern community. Or, I've been able to purchase some
on my trips to Japan. Not cheap, though.

Hello,

The shocks on the gear are just for show. But the large part is a dowel routed out to grab around the wire and glue to the spat. I just cut a gap in there and dress it up to look cool.
