Raider Roundup Washout
« on: September 17, 2011, 07:27:23 PM »
Well, I went today, but ended up leaving early and watching the Huskies self destruct to Nebraska instead. Wind (not too much-very flyable) and rain. Just didn't want to get the plane wet. Will hope for better weather tomorrow, but it doesn't look good. Wish we would have had the contest last weekend when it was mid-70s and clear. Sigh...

Randy, I wish we'd had it last weekend also. I would have been able to be there. It rained for a short while here (10 miles North as the crow flies), but most of the day looked flyable. I hope to sneak down there for a visit tomorrow, but going downstairs and back up pretty much kicks my butt. Funny how a little surgery tends to do that. I suspect that if it could have been stitched closed, it would have been a lot less traumatic.  I have two Dr.'s appointments Monday and one on the 5th. Oh, Joy.  :-[ Steve

PS: Remember that you didn't have your "Slider" ready to fly last weekend, so it would not have mattered.

Yea, I got up this morning to pounding rain and winds 10-20mph. So, it may have been better in Auburn, but I weenied out. I don't mind flying in the cold or wind or overcast, but when it's actually raining...

Oh well, I sure some hardy souls are out there even now and probably having fun.

The weather turned out fine.  We had less rain than yesterday.  See the contest results section for the lowdown.

The contest wasn't a washout by any means , we had a little NW drizzle yesterday so we went to lunch and let it clear . Today was better with steady light breeze. In all we flew 2 rounds of OTS, Classic, NW Profile saturday and 2 rounds of Intermediate, Advanced  and Expert PA today. I'll send a report and Photos to JT to post on Flying Lines. thanks for all who attended and helped out.

Those of us that didn't wimp out had a fine time.  Glass half full or half empty, make hasty decisions and it can spoil your plans.  If you change plans because of a weather forcast, in these parts at least, you won't do much. R%%%%

Well I spent this weekend at the Meet 'n Meat in Davis, CA. No rain for sure!! The winds were very flyable at 5-10 mph, but it was hot (in the 90's on Sunday) Only problem was some dang glary orb in the sky that ruined my second round (gotta learn to deal with that). Have to say that Uncle Jimby and crowd put on a great event! My first time there, but it sure won't be my last!

Here I always heard that the NW always had a misty type of rain.   One of our contests was supposed to rainy, but we beautiful weather and no contestants.   I have lost count of how many contests I have been to just to watch it rain.  Lost my Olympic at a windy weather type contest.  Also in Wichita KANSAS we set at the local deli and watched the rain going horizontal for about an hour one year.  Now I fly for fun and don't worry if I miss a contest or two, especially the ones that people from those contests don't consider coming to ours. West of the Cascades we get rain that ranges from misty to downpour.  It never gets as bad here as it can in the plains states -- the most severe rain I've ever been in was in Nebraska in July or August -- but it's not uncommon to have weeks on end with solid cloud cover and at least a bit of rain every day.

Keep in mind, too, that most of who you hear from are people living between the coast range and the Cascades -- the coast is less populated than the valley, and eastern Oregon and Washington tend to high desert.  It's just that people along the Seattle-Portland-Eugene axis (affectionately and trustingly known by Mark Scarborough's neighbors as "the I-5 mafia") overwhelm the demographics, and can forget that there's anyone else living in (or defining) the region but them.

The problem with electric is that once you get the smoke generator and sound system installed, the plane is too heavy.

Returning to Utah, I crossed them there mountains and did see people.  They all had guns and knives and old trucks.  Also had them big jugs they were drinking out of.  We in Utah only drink lemonade at the trading post and certainly not what I suspect was in them big jugs.

There's a Starbucks I stop at in Riverdale, just off I-84.  There were a bunch of emergency vehicles there the last time I stopped.  I thought it might have been a raid, because somebody turned them in for selling coffee, but I was able successfully to get recaffeinated.
